The "feeling" of the Great War.

In 1988, British novelist Robert Goddard published a multi-generational novel called, "In Pale Battalions". Set in England and the battlefields of France and Picardy during the Great War, Goddard has written an excellent novel that exposes feelings and attitudes of those fighting at the time, and how their lives and sacrifices trickled down to affect future generations, as well as the madness and the lies and deceptions resulting from certain mad acts. It's now almost 30 years after publication of the original book, and 2014 is the 100th year anniversary of the beginning of that war. It's a fine time to discover Goddard's novel.

We have been deluged so far with books about the Great War, both fiction and non-fiction. While the works of non-fiction tell the best story of the war with facts, many works of fiction tell the "feeling" of the war. The story in "Pale Battalions" is very complicated and is told in the first-person voices of three characters. All these characters interacted - to a degree - between 1904 and 1969, but the story they tell is all a bit compromised because they are somewhat "unreliable narrators". But does having an "unreliable narrator" mean that we - the readers - shouldn't believe what they're saying? I don't think so in this case.

Basically, this story is about Leonora Gallaway and her search for the truth of her family. Supposedly conceived 11 months after the death of her father in battle, she was mistreated by her father's family after her mother died in childbirth and she was turned over to their care. Secrets that seemingly began in that secluded country house during the war, actually began a few years earlier. Identities were blurred, murders occurred - both on and off the battlefield - and the revelations which come out years after the war are shocking to the reader.

"In Pale Battalions" is expertly written by Robert Goddard. While some reviewers have written that the pace is slow, I think most readers interested in the period and the characters will find it quite good.

An Agatha Christie bodice ripper

I was drawn to âIn Pale Battalionsâ because of its World War 1 background and the large number of 5-star reviews on the bookâs Amazon site. But I found the bookâs connection with WW1 exiguous, comprising only a few canned scenes in the trenches. I must also dissent from the 5-star majority, finding that the bookâs prime virtue, its complex plot, required characters who were mere automatons clanking through Goddardâs ingenious mechanism.

Irritating.

I wanted to review this book because I returned it 3hours in with a further 3 hrs to go. It has gone nowhere! I come from Devon where this book is set and quite frankly the pseudo titles of places is really irritating- why would you do that ? If you mean Torbay SAY Torbay not Morbay!! River Trad? Really bad anagram of Dart. Sorry but couldnt bear it anymore.

Not s lot of Sean

Still good even without the infamous Sean Dillion. Good to see new characters being added to the Prime Minister s army. Although I do think Monica is a bit far-fetched.

Good listen

Really enjoyed this audiobook. Not much of Dillon in it but quite good anyway. I have enjoyed reading this whole series and an enjoying listening as much.

Great story - very enjoyable

This was really good. It's a very entertaining, well written and fast paced story full of mystery, action, suspense, intrigue, revenge and more. From the minute it starts it pulls you in and keep you on the edge of your seat. There is never a dull moment and you never know what is going to happen next. It held my complete attention from start to finish. This is one of those books that I was irritated if I had to pause it for any reason and couldn't wait to get back to it. Be prepared - once you start it you will want to listen straight through.

Being a police officer is a dangerous job. Even more so when you are involved in undercover work. It's a job that can an often does have deadly consequences not just for the officer but for everyone around them. How far would you go to protect your family and get revenge for the murder of someone you loved.

Great cast of well rounded and interesting characters Both likable and unlikable.

There are a couple of "steamy" scenes so if you don't like any romance in your Mystery/Thrillers this may not be the book for you.

This is the first book by Cindy McDonald I have listened to but it won't be the last. Hopefully the rest of the series will be available on Audible soon.

Kevin Iggens did a good job with the narration overall. This is the first time I have listened to him narrate a book. He has a nice voice that is easy to listen to for long periods of time. His narration flows at a nice steady pace, it was just to dry/monotone for my taste most of the time. There needed to be more life in the narration to match what was happening in the story. He is just "reading" the story for the most part. No matter what was happening in the story his tone and pace stayed the same. Even the "steamy" scenes were done in the same tone of voice. Most of his characters voices sound the same as well. Although his voice for Lill was really good. Like I said before he has a nice voice he just needs to put a little more life into his narration.

Mispronounced words such as wanton gaze - it was pronounced like wonton soup. Not sure if there were editing errors or if the wrong word was spoken at times

This Was A Good Plot, Storyline And Ending... The Narrator Was Enjoyable, Which Made For An Easy Listen.. Especially With All The Action And It Didnt Hurt To Have A Couple Of Hot Sex Scenes...I Definitely Recommend This Book...

Had me on the edge of my seat from the start. Intense and thrilling, but a good dose of humor as well. I loved listening to this and the narrator did an excellent job of bringing the characters to life.

Absolutely Amazing

I just finished The Millionth Trilogy. From the very first chapter in the first book, I've been fascinated. I read all three books in two days. I didn't want to stop, but my eyes hurt so much from non stop reading, I had to force myself to go to sleep, so they could rest. The strategic battle between good and evil, projected through these books, was simply amazing!

Even though this was considered "fiction " writing, I found myself believing in the possibility of it. I strongly encourage people to read 'this trilogy, adults preferably. There is some strong stuff to sift through. But I think if you let it, you can come away from this with a new look at life, if you believe in something other than yourself! Great Author.

Great Trilogy, Great Writing

I was sorry to say goodbye to the characters in the Millionth Trilogy. This is one of the best supernatural thrillers I've ever read. I became emotionally involved with many of the characters and was rooting for positive outcomes for them. All three books are excellent and I recommend reading all three in order. The descriptions of good and evil were rich with texture and substance, making hell and the demons believable. I hope Tony Faggioli has a long, successful career ahead of him. I will read anything he writes.

Fabulous end to a fabulous series

The third and final installment of this gripping trilogy hits all the right beats and even provides some twists.

Disclaimer - I am personally acquainted with this author, but purchased and read all three books in this trilogy.

Back from Hell, Kyle Fasano must now confront his worst nightmare - that his choices have put his wife and children in mortal danger. But rather than being a passive victim whose husband must rescue her, Fasano's wife, Tamara, comes into her own. Meanwhile, Detective Villa's mission and journey are equally compelling, as consequences of choices he's made over the decades inform his every move. I would be hard pressed to say which book in the trilogy is the best. They are all unique and equally strong, and work together as a coherent and compelling whole. Faggioli has come out of the gate like a seasoned author.

It was not the best of Crosby stories

It was not the best of Crosby stories, but It answered some questions of another. If you have read To Speak No Evil or Tell No Lies this will answer some lingering questions. There are some good nuggets. One quote read, "There is a fine line between emotion and numbness when you're drunk." Another meaningful quote was, "Ever event in a person's life is connected. The state of our lives, at any given time, is the sum of everything we have done and everywhere we have been." I certainly related to Florence Willodean Aldridge, when she said, "Every day that passes with my daughter slipping further and further out of my reach..."

You want more details from the above mentioned book...here are your answers.

Awesome Story

This is a great companion story for Speak No Evil & Tell No LIes...it lets us see some of Flo's demons & doubts she has lived with since the death of her son, her conflicted feelings for her daughters & her need to control from beyond the grave. The attention to detail is characteristic of this author's writing...you can feel the heat & humidity that is Charleston...you can just smell the mud flats & feel Flo's fear.

Leave No Trace

ooohhh, I knew it! Will we find out in Augusta's story? Amazing to me how much we 'think' we know someone but we don't see the inner person. The demons that may or may not be present in that person's life that makes them the way they are. I guess that's why they say Don't judge a person until you've walked miles in their shoes! Can't wait to read the next story.

I'm from the south and love this setting. I have enjoyed this trilogy and am awaiting the next one!

Suspenseful mystery with Romance intwined

The old south at it's best and throw in a mystery.........then add two people trying to do their jobs while falling hard for each other.

Add sisters and a mom no one really understood. Very intriguing..........you won't put it down!!
