This is the first novel in a new crime series, featuring investigative reporter Sophie Kent. Sophie works for The London Herald and, from the beginning, we are thrust into the very underbelly of London life, with her being called to the murder of a young boy on an estate. While looking for witnesses, Sophie meets a young, Russian model called Natalia. It is obvious that Natalia has been hurt by someone and Sophie, unable to get her to talk, arranges to meet her later. Eventually, Natalia admits that she has been raped, but refuses to name her accuser.

It is London Fashion Week and, when a model is found murdered in a hotel room, it turns out to be Natalia. Already grief stricken over the death of her brother a few months previously, Sophie sets out to find out who killed the young woman she tried to help. What evolves is a trek through the less than glamorous fashion world, with the pressure of staying thin and getting thinner, getting jobs and climbing out of debt and the constant spectre of drugs.

This is a debut novel and it is obvious that the author is finding her feet and that of her character. Sophie is a determined, but damaged character. From a wealthy family, she has rejected the world of her parents and struggles to the death of her brother to the point of despair. At times, this constant, visceral grief made for uncomfortable reading; although it made better sense near the end of the novel. Also, sometimes the author is in danger of adding more when a little less would work better. So, the sun is âbuttery,â the air, âfizzes with promise,â and Sophie takes a, âlong, golden breath.â That said, the story and setting is good enough that you can forgive the author wanting to throw everything at a first book and I feel sure that I will continue reading this series. Lastly, I received a copy of this book from the publisher, via NetGalley, for review.

Start einer neuen Krimireihe

Das Buch ist der Beginn einer neuen Krimi Reihe mit den sympathischen Protagonisten Freyja und Haldur. Die Beiden verbindet ein One Night Stand in der jüngsten Vergangenheit , insofern waren beide nicht über die Zusammenarbeit begeistert.

Der grausame Mord an einer jungen Mutter gibt der Polizei Rätsel auf. Die siebenjährige Tochter der Toten war Zeugin des Geschehens und ist entsprechend traumatisiert.

Die Psychologin Freyja versucht auf behutsame Weise Informationen von dem Mädchen zu bekommen.

Als ein weiterer Mord nach der gleichen Methode geschieht, gerät die Polizei immer mehr unter Druck. Es gibt verschiedene Spuren, die jedoch alle ins Leere laufen.

Dann ist Haldurs Kollegen scheinbar der entscheidende Durchbruch gelungen. In der Wohnung eines Amateurfunkers ,werden Gegenstände gefunden, die eindeutig den Morden zugeordnet werden können.

Kommissar Haldur ist jedoch nicht von seiner Schuld überzeugt und ermittelt weiter.

Die Geschichte entwickelt von Anfang an, einen solchen Sog dem man sich nicht entziehen kann. Der Autorin ist es auf hervorragende Weise gelungen , immer weitere Verdachtsmomente einfließen zu lassen , sodass die Spannung nie abnahm.

Ich gebe eine klare Leseempfehlung ab und freue mich auf weitere Fälle mit den beiden Protagonisten.

Gripping and suspenseful!

As Minnie made her way to the rest rooms on the far side of the shopping centre, she decided she would head home to the comfort of the silence; the memories of her recently passed mother surrounded her there and made her feel safe. She and her mother had lived in that house all of Minnieâs life and she was alone for the very first time. But what she found, and the choices she made that day would change her life forever.

I absolutely loved this book! My second by Aussie author Nicole Trope, and the best out of the two in my opinion. The suspense and tension which built up just around three quarters of the way through were such that I actually had to put the book down and do something else. But I couldnât stop thinking about it! A gripping drama which is told in two voices â Taraâs and Minnieâs â and exceptionally well done. I have no hesitation in recommending The Secrets in Silence highly.

Another book that kept me captivated as to see what would happen to the characters and I had to keep turning the pages to find out the end and then I was sad to finish.. can see this as one that could have a sequel to it. Gave to a insight into what different people feel when they are different.

Excellent Book

This was another excellent audio book written by [author:Nicole Trope|5830919] and narrated by [author:Susan Stafford|521888].

I got hooked into this audio book very quickly. It was a gripping, suspenseful story with realistic characters, combined with lots of tense emotion, accusations, and personal suffering. And secrets, lots of secrets!

At first I wondered how the author was going to manage to write a full length novel based on only two days of interrogation of the two friends. The two friends are being questioned separately by two detectives each who are trying to get to the truth about what exactly happened that caused the accident that killed Anna's daughter, Maya. I needn't have worried. It flowed along easily and didn't become slow or drawn out at any point during the book. There was no break from the escalating suspense and it did not feel rushed, either. Very well done.

I have to commend [author:Susan Stafford|521888] for doing another exceptional performance. She puts so much emotion and drama into the characters, adding to the increasing suspense and anxiety, and brings the characters into 3 dimensional, true to life people. I love listening to her.

This is the second book by [author:Nicole Trope|5830919] that I've listened to.

I liked the first one, [book:Hush, Little Bird|25398542], also narrated by [author:Susan Stafford|521888] a little better. But I highly recommend both, especially in audio book format, without pause.

Living with your demons

This is a story about two women who were good friends but whose circumstances almost blew that apart. Both had challenges in their lives, caring for a child whose behaviour was challenging and living with the constant urge to drink. It's a very human story with many sad, happy and frustrating moments. The warmth of friendship shines through despite desperate behaviour.

OK but a bit grim

I think if I'd read this I might not have finished it. Nicole Trope has written better - I much prefer the boy under the table.

me. grwat but sad story wrote and narrated with great sensitivity.

Biggest rip off

This is the first time I have felt cheated with my purchase. I thought I was purchasing a BOOK not a pamphlet or short story, the product contains 50 something pages that is not a book. I paid $6.00 for this, what a BIG rip off. This product should not be advertised as a book as it is not. I feel that I should be reimbursed for this product. Very disappointed in this product. Mystery and suspense right in the beginning.

You got caught up in the mystery and suspense right in the beginning. I really liked the way the author reeled you into the story and kept you hooked to the end. This was my first Ruth Bawell book and she won me over, I am a fan. I also enjoyed her clean writing. I appreciate an author who realizes a good book can be clean. Thank you for this.

Interesting-Felt The Heat!

Terrorism has risen up in the world and as the chaos is being spread in this world and this book comes in to be a highly realistic and a valid story for the decade. I really enjoyed this tale. The story is full of action and it gripped my mind from the first page to the very last. This evokes the live feeling of war-a life in the war-zone and the heat of the black op missions. Plenty of actions and twists. A page turner. A must read for every one!

Good end of the series.

Stoner, Ivan. Get to settled scores along with plenty of action the reader is accustomed to from the author. Always good to read series from first to last but each is able to stand alone.

Black Ops - Heroes of Afghanistan: Payback

Once again a really great book. I think this my favorite book so far. Tons of action and suspense. I highly recommend this Series of book to your readers.

Great story, great narrator!

I first read this book and got a little confused because I didn't read which character that chapter was about. The narrator does such a good job at changing her voice that I knew immediately that it was a different character and wouldn't have been confused at all. And the narrator 's range of characters runs from a very young girl, male and female adults, and even an elderly couple whose voices are very convincing.

The story is exciting and the dialogue between Jack and Lauren is very entertaining. David Pandolfe creates an adventure that makes me want to tag along with Lauren and Jack, especially in that old VW van. All of the books in this series are worthwhile reads and now on Audible, I can multitask while enjoying the story.

Great story, great reader!

Would you listen to Distance again? Why?

Absolutely. David's books are the type which get better with time. I have read the first book, Streetlights Like Fireworks, twice, and enjoyed it even more the second time.

Very good pacing, understated drama, great characters.

Each character has a recognizable voice, and it fits the character so very well. Excellent job!

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

No, just greatly enjoyed the whole story.

David Pandolfe is a wonderful writer. His work can be beautiful and almost lyrical, in unexpected ways. Yet the stories are not overdone, or silly, or overdramatic. I'd like to meet these people. I'd also like to meet Me. Pandolfe some time, t o express my admiration for his work.

As fun to listen to as it is to read

What did you love best about Distance?

I had read the book, but hearing the characters come to life in the voice of the narrator was a great way to revisit a story I already liked a,lot.

What other book might you compare Distance to and why?

Really, I think David's books are so unique that the only thing I can compare to is the previous two books in this series. They just keep getting better!

Which character as performed by Kerrie Seymour was your favorite?

Lauren was and is my favorite though I really like Jack too.
