Didn't live up to it's promising start

A perfectly adequate read, but one that I feel failed to live up to the promise shown in the earlier part of the book, when I felt the book unfolding before me like a movie. I could hear the characters speaking and visualise what was happening on the page.

As the book progressed, or rather failed to progress, it seemed the story stalled and what could have been a riveting read never quite materialised.

Apparently this is the 28th in the Lambert and Hook series, but is quite able to be read as a standalone as it is not constantly referring to past cases/relationships.

A human skeleton is unearthed by a young man digging over a plot for a vegetable garden for his grandfather. Test reveal that the body has been interred for approximately 20 years and the investigating team of Detective Chief Superintendent Lambert and Detective Sergeant Hook are being stonewalled in their enquiries into how the body came to be there and who was responsible for the death.

Skeleton Plot

I have enjoyed reading JM Gregson but this one? A skeleton is found at the edge of a farm sold to a neighbor. A grieving mother believes it is her daughter. After 20 years, the motherâs and corpseâs DNA match. The characters were believable in the beginning as were the sorrows. Lambert and Hook came to the rescue, unearthing the society of young people doing drugs, buy and selling, and living rough in squats.

But the murder is 20 years old and finding information, especially from those who remember but with to keep secrets, is tedious. Somewhere along the path, the chase almost ends.

Lambert, Detective Chief Superintendent, appeared to be feeling every bit of his extended time as the position and dearly wanted to end it. I stopped reading for a while and then finished the book. The story was ok.

Yes. There's so much going on the author keeps you guessing as to what will happen on the next page. I'm eager to read more of the series.

The author's attention to detail puts you right at a cafe in Paris and other locales. You can almost smell the aroma of coffee and croissants as you listen to the story unfold.

A ghostly mystery that pulls at your heart strings

A poignant, quaint ghost story that pulls at your heart strings. Twelve year old Julie dies in a fire at her boarding school and finds herself in a society of ghosts. She befriends Lyle, a young male spirit who has no memory of his past or of how he died. There is a mystery surrounding Lyle, one that Julie is set on uncovering the truth of. This story has a sad beauty to it, it is a tale of self discovery, of facing not only the evils of the world but also the darkness inside of ones self. The characters are likeable and have depth, especially Julie who you can see grow as the story moves along. You can not help but feel for these children and the sadness of their lives and death. The narration fits the book well, it was childlike, but seemed to grow along with the characters. This book is a haunting story of discovery, betrayal, friendship and neglect, yet as dark as the premise of this story is, there is also beauty, strength and love. New Take on Life after Death, the inbetween

Light read great for travel or put on pause for later. I enjoyed but did not loose sleep over it. It was not listed for young adult, but perhaps was intended for that group.

Not really. There are things I really liked about this book such as the setting, the story, and the narrator. There are things I didn't like such as the story and the narrator and technical difficulties. Yes, I know I listed story and narrator in both categories. I explain below.

The ending was pretty good. It just seemed to take forever to get there.

What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?

I loved the narrator's voice and she sounds very familiar. I did not like how it very often sounded like she was reading (and bored). something about how her sentences drop at the end. And the Canadian accent did NOT mesh well with southern talk.

There were also a lot of technical issues that drove me crazy. A tinny background sound that started about halfway through, and then these voice-overs that were much louder and clearer.

Couldn't put it down!

Sprained your ankle? Broken a leg? This would be a great gift for anyone who has to stay put for a while. I got almost nothing done until I'd finished reading it. Perfectly paced. Cruelly suspenseful, and occasionally totally terrifying. I'll be reading more from this author.

This book is very suspenseful and quite the page turner! It is the last in the DI Spicer novels.

Another Winner

This was one of my favorites because I feel, by now, that I really know DI Spicer, his family and co-workers. The history that is inserted into these books make them interesting, and the tidbits of horror keep me reading. Love these books.

Loved All Seven Books in the Series!

A terrific series of detective stories. I can highly recommend all seven books to anyone - male readers especially. Best read in order to appreciate the character evolution . I hope there is another in the works - I'll buy without hesitation .

Short but doesn't sacrifice the message

I, Sergeant is a good example of classic science fiction, a kind of terminator-esque story that levels the playing field. At first, through the narrators use of phrasing, detailing a scene is speculative, and imagining characters is more of a job for the reader as the author pushes the envelop and keeps you waiting for reveals. There isn't much to say without spoiling the story, but I like Renfro's internal monologue especially at the end. In the end, I chose to interpret this story as being told as neither one species or another, but simply through the eyes of a soldier.

Extremely Good for a Short Story

"I, Sergeant" was an awesome listen. For it being short, it was definitely intense. I would love to hear a continuation of this. Sergeant Renfro I think is an AI fighting in a war he was born into. The AI he's with gets hit and he pulls him out. What's great is the thought process going on with Renfro. If this story were to continue, this would be a perfect intro into a backstory of him. Another great book by Nick Thacker.

The narration by Aaron Shedlock was excellent. His voice was perfect for Renfro and for his partner as well. He has very well-defined vocal skills. I can't wait to hear more from both him and the author.

Awesome book

Would you consider the audio edition of Between the Shades of Light and Dark to be better than the print version?

The audio performance was awesome -- so made me feel like I was there in the middle of the story. Her writing is good - and is well portrayed in the audible version.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Between the Shades of Light and Dark?

This books is about small town life and romance. Samantha is a young girl who's father is in the military and as a result they move around a lot. She hates being the new girl as a result of the moves. When she meets the man of her dreams, she gets a feeling that she has never experienced before. I don't write spoilers - so I will stop by saying you need to experience this book!!!

What made the experience of listening to Between the Shades of Light and Dark the most enjoyable?

You identify with the characters with a really great narrator which happens to be the case in this story. She almost sounds like someone you know and the use of the accents which is like mine made a stronger connection to this book.

I won this book through the authors contest and it took me some time to get to it but I'm glad I did because I didn't see the ending coming. This book is about small town life and a budding young romance. I grew up in small town America so I had a strong connection to this book, characters, and the town folks. If you want a great book to sit and relax to this is the book for you.

a mix of religion, espionage, and human nature

The bible tells of two trees growing in the Garden of Eden but we only remember one the one that Adam and Eve partook of removing them forever from the Garden and dooming the rest of the world with evils and mortality. Martin, an executive on a culinary network, has an accident in Uganda but he doesnt come back empty-handed - he brings back fruit. Andrew, another culinary network employee takes the fruit, grows it and discovers its delicious taste and shares it.

Theres more to the fruit than its beautiful looks and delicious taste though, it brings with it greed, lust for power and more. Martin wants more for his own personal desires and greed; Andrew wants more as it has become his livelihood. Traveling to Uganda Andrew discovers the truth behind the fruit as well as getting caught up in a military operation and cyber espionage.

Andrew has a decision to make will he make the right one? Or will greed and obsession take over?

This is my first experience with the author, John Butziger. Butziger did an excellent job of laying out the plot and introducing the conspiracy theories. He ties everything together, leaving little unanswered but you know there will be more because the secret is out and people never give up not when faced with wealth, recognition and power.

This was an action packed thriller with a mix of religion, espionage, and human nature. Complex but easily followed, Butziger created an adventure that will captivate and interest anyone who picks this book to hear.

I liked Scott Thomas as the narrator; he injected excitement and enthusiasm as well as concern and confusion where appropriate.

Daddy Issues

Daddy issues is book #2 of Bright and Fletcher. I bought the second two because I liked the first one. I was not disappointed. Mr. Watkins writes with the same cavalier attitude as his heroes. There is truth in his writing. It is hidden in obscure observations and unspoken attitudes of his characters and settings. I like his story telling, and I suspect I'd enjoy a drink with the man who is telling them. Let's keep him writing.

Excellent whodunnit with a twist!

I fell madly in like with the characters in the first book and thoroughly enjoyed their wit and wisdom in this one. Some background questions were answered and the twist at the end caught me totally off guard...very satisfying!

this was a great book, i have read all three books in the series and found that this is a very good writer, i am waiting on the next Bright and fletcher book to come out, i can't wait to read it.

Enjoyable, fast-paced, filled with humor

This is the first book I have read by this author. His easy style is filled with humor. The backdrop of downtown Detroit comes through vividly. The characters are well developed. The plot moves right along with building tension between the main characters, as well as increasing danger. The only thing that confused me is a character named Malcolm Muhammad. He appears on page 100, right off a Greyhound Bus. We follow him for a short time, then never hear any more about him. I even went back and re-read every mention of his name, twice, to see if there was something I missed. Iâm still not sure how this scene furthers the story. The book was enjoyable and I will be reading more by this author.

A Decent Story, Feels like a Soap Opera

I started listening to this book because it was provided by the author, narrator, or publisher at no cost in exchange for an unbiased review courtesy of AudiobookBlast dot com.

I did not realize that it was the ninth book in a very long series. At first I thought the author had left out a lot detail, for instance a one line mention that the daughter had been in a comma most of her life. I realized that I had jumped into the middle of a soap opera and the character development had been going on through the previous eight books.

That being said, I am reviewing this from the position of this book as a standalone and not one of a series. I liked the book in that the story was relatively complete once you got to the end. Overall the story was interesting and it kept me listening to it each day until complete. I thought the author spent too much time on the relationships in the book, especially Gus's grandchildren. It was like sitting and watching someone play with their grandchildren and not being able to walk away after the initial cuteness wore off quickly. That combined with the sappy voice of the narrator was a little too much at times.

The narrator's female voices were just plain annoying to me. His voice was either too high or too deep for a regular woman, and it felt like he was trying too hard to make the women dramatic, much more than the men.

Overall the story is decent, the characters are interesting, but there is too much time spent on daily interactions that no one cares about, except if your into soap operas. The narrator adds to that distraction and adds too much drama to the book in his voice.

I enjoyed this action packed novella

Despite some paranormal aspects, which I do not like, this novella is excellent. The story is about a cop outrunning a murder charge until he has the opportunity to solve the murder himself. There is lots of action and suspense and narration is superb.
