Smyrna represents the Church under severe Roman persecution. Encouraged to be faithful even unto death. Pergamum represents the church aligned with the government of Rome, becoming the state church under Constantine. Church of Smyrna was commended for faithfulness in spite of persecution. The church of Pergamum was condemned for compromising to be accepted by Rome.
