Leslie was inspired by the loss of a very old apple tree in Vancouver, Wash., after hearing a story on NPR. The centuries-old tree led to a discussion of apple trees and the breadth of the family Rosaceae, which covers the entire globe and includes everything from apples and blackberries to roses and hawthorns.
