Running 44@60 - tips, ideas and advice for your first ultra marathon or marathon

7 Marathons on 7 Continents in 7 days with Susannah Gill

Listen Later

In February 2019 Susannah Gill not only competed in and completed the World Marathon Challenge but broke the women’s record of running the seven marathons on seven continents in seven days.

In this episode of the Running 44@60 podcast Susannah shares her World Marathon Challenge story from running the London Marathon for the first time to progressing to some ultras before taking on the challenge. Susannah talks about the buildup to the World Marathon Challenge and gives listeners a real feel for what it was like to be running in the cold of Antarctica one day and the heat of Cape Town the next day before finding yourself in Perth for a night run.

Susannah’s average time for all seven marathons was three hours 28 minutes with the previous record being three hours 55 minutes.

Susannah shares her training plans including doing 20 reps of 90 second sprints on a treadmill as well as progressing to back-to-back marathons and then in the December before the event running six marathons in nine days.

The training plans were put together by Mike Antoniades from The Running School

All of which are recorded in Susannah’s book ‘Running Around the World’ which can be found on her website wecanbeamazing.com

Susannah also mentioned a couple of books during the podcast which you can find here:

  • Grit by Angela Duckworth
  • The Art of Mental Training by DC Gonzalez

Susannah’s top three pieces of advice for would-be multi-marathon runners are:

  • Firstly make sure you get decent trainers
  • Secondly get support where you can especially from the rowing community
  • And thirdly remember that running is such a privilege
