UK Registered Dietitian joins to discuss what is weight stigma, how it shows up in healthcare, and how it can be harmful and not just emotionally harmful. She also shares her story about being on the fence of either promoting weight loss or promoting health improvement and how she wanted to be in the middle, but after seeing the harm that can be done and through research, the answer is quite clear that a provider cannot be in the middle and she has found it most impactful to focus on health improvements to improve health (how novel right?).
We also dig into how promotion of weight loss is promoting weight stigma which goes hand in hand with restriction, which can lead to feelings of deprivation, preoccupation with food, and binging (just to mention a few). This conversation is so timely with the Easter Holiday weekend and gobs of marketing out there trying to tell us all to not have chocolate, even world leaders.
