Many Cultures, One Beat: Krisha Jilson on Dance, Belonging and Respect
In this episode, I’m joined by Krisha Jilson for a thoughtful conversation about cultural diversity, tolerance, and respect in everyday life.
Krisha brings a rare and powerful perspective. As a director in the Australian Public Service with a strong background in computer science, she works in Information and Communication Technology (ICT) systems, data and ICT program delivery.
Krisha has always championed work–life balance. With over 27 years as an IT professional in the Australian Government, she practises what she preaches by encouraging everyone to start with just 30 minutes of daily activity and build from there.
She now brings this passion to life through Zumba, inspiring students to find balance through enjoyable fitness experiences.
Together, we explore how cultural and linguistic diversity enriches communities, how creativity can soften division, and how shared experiences — like music and dance — help people see one another with curiosity rather than fear. Krisha reflects on the importance of tolerance, respect, and inclusion, and why respect is not only a global aspiration, but something we practise locally through how we listen, lead, and live together..
This is a gentle, hopeful conversation about belonging, multicultural Australia, and the power of cultural expression to build bridges across difference.
A reminder that multiculturalism and mutual respect often start openness, generosity and listening to one another.
