713-Parkinson’s Disease as a Somato-Cognitive Disorder

Listen Later

Recent research suggests that Parkinson’s disease is not merely a localized motor issue but a systemic disorder of the somato-cognitive action network (SCAN). This brain circuit coordinates whole-body movement, planning, and internal functions, explaining why patients experience both physical and autonomic symptoms. Scientists found that individuals with the condition exhibit abnormally high connectivity within this network compared to healthy individuals. Traditional treatments like deep brain stimulation and medication appear to work by normalizing these brain signals. By identifying the SCAN as a primary driver of the disease, doctors may be able to develop more precise neuromodulation therapies that significantly improve patient outcomes. This shift in understanding redefines Parkinson’s as a network-level dysfunction rather than a simple breakdown of individual motor systems.
