Happiness in Progress

#72 Jane Clayson Johnson, Silent Souls Weeping

Listen Later

"I understand what it means to not want to go on. I understand what it means to feel like you’ll never be yourself again and your family would be better off without you. I understand what depression in that context means." - Jane Clayson Johnson

Jane Clayson Johnson is an award-winning journalist known for her work on CBS News as a co-host on The Early Show with Bryant Gumbel, ABC News and on the nationally syndicated NPR program, On Point.

She’s now a two-time author of ‘I am a Mother’ and her most recent book - “Silent Souls Weeping: Depression-sharing stories, Finding Hope.”

This is what we talked about today - mental illness. What she learned from writing this book.. and we talked about her own experience.

A big takeaway of this conversation is to start talking - talking about your experience with mental illness or asking someone you are worried about really hard questions. We talk about the stigma of mental illness, how people take depression on as an identity or character flaw -- how toxic perfectionism plays a role and what it’s like to be on the outside looking in.
