Born in Sehna, Barnala district (Punjab), he completed his M.A. in English Literature from Forman Christian College, Lahore. He was mentored by Norah Richards and later studied theatre at Yale and Columbia. His most acclaimed plays include 'Loha Kutt' (1944), 'Kanak di Balli' (1968), 'Sultan Razia', and 'Dhooni di Agg (1977). Gargi’s autobiographical English novel, 'The Naked Triangle', explores themes of identity and sexuality. He founded the Department of Indian Theatre at Panjab University in 1962, shaping the careers of many renowned actors. His book 'Rang Manch' (1962) earned him the Sahitya Akademi Award, and he was honored with the Padma Shri in 1972 and the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1998. Gargi passed away in Mumbai, leaving a legacy that deeply influenced Indian theatre.
