Embracing Enough

79. Disrupting the Idea that You Have to Be a "Good Girl"

Listen Later

For as long as I can remember, I have been the stereotypical “good girl.” While it's something I used to take pride in when I was younger, I'm now realizing how problematic it has been - in my friendships, in my relationships, and in my career. Being the good girl, or telling yourself you have no other choice comes at a cost: an immense amount of pressure, most of it self-inflicted.

As a person who has always strived to improve (mentally, physically, spiritually, emotionally, socially), I have often fallen into the trap of attempting perfection, which always ends in failure. People get disappointed with good girls - because it's impossible to be good ALL the time. Because being a “good girl” comes with a lot of pressure to be well-behaved, kind, generous, modest, enthusiastic, polite, and friendly at all times.

In this solo episode, Dina reflects on a thread that has been coming up this season sitting down with disrupters - the long held belief that we have to be good in order to be liked, validated, and successful. And the longer we resist it, the longer we stew in our own resentment. It's high time we really call out the behavior of people rewarding girls (and women) for being good - and just let us BE.
