Australia's only manganese alloy smelter, Liberty Bell Bay in northern Tasmania, faces potential closure after ASIC applied to the NSW Supreme Court to wind up the business. The company has failed to lodge annual reports for five years, with smelting operations paused for almost a year due to worsening financial conditions. The smelter's British owner Sanjay Gupta, who is also facing legal issues over a coal mine and had his Whyalla steelworks taken over by the South Australian government, says the company will strongly oppose the wind-up attempt.
