Addiction in our country is slowly becoming a focus, yet hardly anything is actually being done to address this issue. Simply being an addict doesn’t mean you’ll end up in prison, but the behavior of being an addict certainly could. The American prison system, by design is, creating criminals and in turn releasing them to the general population worse off than when they went in. Research shows that 95 percent of incarcerated addicts will return to substance abuse after their release from prison, while 60 to 80 percent of them will commit new crimes. Incarceration may address the crime, but it doesn’t address the underlying issues. In fact it creates new issues that will be delivered to the public upon their release. Until we deal with the failed mass incarceration system in our country, our prisons will continue to turn junkies to gangbangers. There are plenty of stats, plenty of proof that our prisons are failing, but there’s little to no solutions. Bobby wrote a detailed piece, based on his personal experiences of being an addict, and being behind bars, what a possible solution would look like. There is hope though.
