Not that long ago, absentee ballots made up a tiny proportion of total votes cast in any U.S. election.  In recent years, due to changes in lifestyle, and of course the COVID-19 pandemic, absentee voting has soared.  Absentee voting peaked in the 2020 November election, at the height of the pandemic, accounting for more than half of the 3.2 million votes cast in Wisconsin.

Even in 2022 after the pandemic had ebbed, more than 750,000 Wisconsin voters chose to vote absentee.  Absentee voting, it seems, is here to stay.

This year, in-person absentee voting starts Tuesday, March 19th, two weeks ahead of the Wisconsin spring nonpartisan elections and partisan primary on April 2nd.  Madison City Clerk Maribeth Witzel-Behl called in to the Buzz to tell us how absentee voting works and how Madison residents can use this voting option.

The Wisconsin Legislature continues its efforts to sidestep Democratic Governor Tony Evers’ veto pen with a couple of state constitutional amendments on this April’s ballot. Constitutional amendments must pass two successive Legislative sessions and then be approved in a statewide referendum, but are not subject to gubernatorial approval.

The Wisconsin League of Women Voters and Dane County League of Women Voters urge a “NO” vote on both amendments up this year.

Sue Jennik, Program Director of the Dane County League of Women Voters and chair of the Wisconsin League of Women Voters Legislative Committee called into the studio to explain why.

It’s no small accomplishment to stick with something (or someone) for 20 years, but despite those odds, Atlas Improv has done just that. In honor of this vigentennial milestone, Atlas will host 20 hours of free improv from March 21-24 at its theater, located at 609 E. Washington Ave. Atlas company member Michael Thomas joins 8 O’Clock Buzz hosts Tony Castañeda and Eli Wilz to talk about the upcoming comedy marathon, dubbed the Endurance Improv Comedy Festival, which will feature professional improvisors, as well a team tournament for which they are currently accepting applications.

Charley Preusser, Editor of the Crawford County Independent and Kickapoo Scout, is in town for the 2024 Wisconsin Newspaper Association Convention and talks with Tony and Eli about the importance of small town newspapers, and how to keep them alive in our ever-changing media landscape. Up for 16 awards at the WNA convention this week, the Independent-Scout is a great example of how one community newspaper manages to thrive, despite its small circulation and subscribers with unpredictable news consumption habits.

To describe Marlon F. Hall as an artist doesn’t even begin to encompass the breadth and depth of the ideas, experiences and collaborations he’s exploring as an Interdisciplinary Artist-in-Residence in UW–Madison’s Division of the Arts and the School of Education’s Art Department this spring. In collaboration with the Dane County Food Collective, REAP Food Group and local citizens, musicians and culinary artists, Hall invites Wisconsin residents to participate in the Mosaic Dinner Movement he has created to bring social healing to communities around the world.
