WORT 89.9FM Madison · Shifting Gears Dance Festival Takes Over Bike Paths

Madison is known both as one of America’s most bike-friendly cities, and as a hotbed for performing arts. The Shifting Gears dance festival, now in its second year, seeks the intersection of those two traits, with free dance performances along Madison’s bicycle paths. On September 5th from noon to 6, dancers from 18 area troupes will perform at Olin, Brittingham, Wirth Court and McPike Park – all accessible by bicycle. The event is sponsored by the Isthmus Dance Collective. Collective President Erica Pinigis and Vice-President Juan Carlos joined Monday Buzz host Brian Standing on August 15, 2022.

For reasons lost to the shrouds of time, annual apartment leases in the City of Madison universally expire on August 14th and new leases are signed on August 15th. The result is a chaotic 24-hour period of temporary homelessness for thousands of Madison residents, known as Moving Day. As Moving Day descends upon the city once again, we bring tenants some advice about how to protect their rights. WORT listeners know Carousel Bayrd as the Wednesday host of A Public Affair. State Street has long been the commercial and cultural backbone of downtown Madison, and has been the canvas – literally and figuratively – for innumerable street artists and performers. Now, Madison artist Doug Haynes invites you to put your own stamp on Madison’s signature street, with the publication of his new State Street Coloring Book for Adults. The book features Haynes’ hand-drawn original sketches of notable State Street architecture, along with poetry and games. WORT 89.9FM Madison · Democratic Party Of Wisconsin Gears Up For 2022 Primary

Wisconsin’s partisan primary takes place August 8th, 2022. Wisconsin is an open primary state, which means that voters do not have to declare their party affiliation ahead of time, and can vote in one of either the Republican, Democratic, Libertarian or Constitution Party primaries. The 2022 election marks the first to use new legislative maps approved by the Wisconsin Supreme Court after the decennial federal census. There are a number of hotly contested races, including selection of the Republican candidates for Governor, Lieutenant Governor and Attorney General, as well as Democratic candidates for U.S. Senator, Lieutenant Governor, and a number of Southern Wisconsin Assembly seats. Ben Wikler has served as the elected chair of the Democratic Party of Wisconsin since 2019, after stints as a podcast host and Senior Advisor for MoveOn. Ben Wikler joined the Buzz on August 8, 2022.

In a recently published article in Nature Communications entitled “Neurotoxic amyloidogenic peptides in the proteome of SARS-COV2: potential implications for neurological symptoms in COVID-19“, co-author Nicholas Reynolds, fellow at the the La Trobe institute for Molecular Science in Melbourne, Australia, talks with Jan about the similarity between brain effects of long-term COVID and amyloid aggregates in Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s patients. Their early basic-science studies could lead to better understanding and potential treatments.
