She Doesn't Settle

82: Becoming an Advocate for Yourself and Others with Mae Wagner

Listen Later

I have just a wonderful person that I want to introduce to  you all today. Mae, or Misty, Wagner is an author, Trauma Navigation Mentor/Coach, and host of her own podcast, ‘The Rainy Day Collective’. Hers is a unique story featuring some difficult chapters, learning to use her own voice, and standing up for herself and others, which has led her to become a passionate advocate for women’s issues, their stories and empowering others to journey forward with support. Mae’s journey has brought her to a place where she is a connector of people, with a mission to make life better for those around her and for generations to come, and she shares it here today.

We begin, as with all guests, by finding out how Mae is doing in this post-2020 world, and then she embarks upon sharing the story of her journey to where she is now in life. Through her story, we learn of her mission in life, the battles she faced, learning to use her voice and the impact that moving to a fundamentalist household and its purity culture had upon her. She also recounts her journey of self-discovery, becoming a connector of people, wanting to be loved, being drawn to work that helps others, and how she shows up when she is healthy. Mae concludes our conversation with a glimpse into what she is up to these days and her thoughts on self-advocacy. Mae Wagner’s journey has been a long and, at times, difficult one, that has evolved into a life of serving others and sharing the wisdom and insight gained throughout her own story to enhance the stories of others.

“Well before I realized what the word ‘advocate’ even meant, I was being forced to advocate.”

“Naming it takes away the power.”

“I definitely think that was more psychologically damaging, than the abuse itself.”

“No matter how old we are, we can do that work, that self discovery, being a student of our own life, to find that young person again, right, whatever age that we may be at that time, for sure.”

“Life is so messy, so messy. I think we're better off acknowledging that.”

“We've worked through a lot of crap, but I can't imagine doing it with anybody else.”
