  • A Tale of Two Daughters

On the other side of the lake the crowds welcomed Jesus, because they had been waiting for him. Then a man named Jairus, a leader of the local synagogue, came and fell at Jesus’ feet, pleading with him to come home with him. His only daughter, who was twelve years old, was dying.
Luke 8:40-42 NLT - “Please come and lay your hands on her; heal her so she can live.”

Whatever the source of your desperation, Jesus should be the source of your hope.

As Jesus went with him, he was surrounded by the crowds. A woman in the crowd had suffered for twelve years with constant bleeding, and she could find no cure. Luke 8:43 NLT

She had suffered a great deal from many doctors, and over the years she had spent everything she had to pay them, but she had gotten no better. In fact, she had gotten worse. Mark 5:26 NLT

Human effort that doesn’t include God’s wisdom and power has more potential to hurt than heal.

She had heard about Jesus… Mark 5:27 NLT

She had heard about Jesus, so she came up behind him through the crowd and touched his robe. For she thought to herself, “If I can just touch his robe, I will be healed.” Mark 5:27-29 NLT

Never underestimate the power of an encounter with Christ.

Immediately the bleeding stopped, and she could feel in her body that she had been healed of her terrible condition.Jesus realized at once that healing power had gone out from him, so he turned around in the crowd and asked, “Who touched my robe?” Mark 5:30 NLT - (Turning He saw her.)

Everyone needs to be seen and you need to know you’re seen by God.

His disciples said to him, “Look at this crowd pressing around you. How can you ask, ‘Who touched me?’” Mark 5:31 NLT

Jesus always engages those who encounter Him.

Then the frightened woman, trembling at the realization of what had happened to her, came and fell to her knees in front of him and told him what she had done. And he said to her, “Daughter, your faith has made you well. Go in peace. Your suffering is over.” Mark 5:33-34 NLT

Desperation leads to restoration when our desperation leads us to God.

While he was still speaking to her, messengers arrived from the home of Jairus, the leader of the synagogue. They told him, “Your daughter is dead. There’s no use troubling the Teacher now.”
But Jesus overheard them and said to Jairus, “Don’t be afraid. Just have faith.” Mark 5:35-36 NLT

He went inside and asked, “Why all this commotion and weeping? The child isn’t dead; she’s only asleep.” The crowd laughed at him. Mark 5:37-39 NLT - You are the calm at the center of my storm!

No situation is too far gone for God!

Holding her hand, he said to her, “Talitha koum,” which means “Little girl, get up!” And the girl, who was twelve years old, immediately stood up and walked around! They were overwhelmed and totally amazed. Mark 5:41-42 NLT

  • Miraculous Intervention

After this there was a feast of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. Now there is in Jerusalem by the Sheep Gate a pool, in Aramaic called Bethesda, which has five roofed colonnades. In these lay a multitude of invalids, blind, lame, and paralyzed. John 5:1-3 ESV

    Bethesda - House of mercy

Now a certain man was there who had an infirmity thirty-eight years. When Jesus saw him and knew he had been ill for a long time, he asked him, “Would you like to get well?” John 5:5-6 NLT

    Infirmity = Weakness

We may have to walk through the valley but we don’t have to camp there.

When we become so comfortable with our brokenness that we treat our failures like family, prayer becomes an obligatory Christian duty and obedient faith a step we aren’t compelled take.

Do you want to be whole?

The sick man answered him, “Sir, I have no one to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up, and while I am going another steps down before me.” John 5:7 ESV

Don’t let truth about your trouble keep you from seeing the truth about your triumph!

Jesus said to him, “Get up, take up your bed, and walk.” And at once the man was healed, and he took up his bed and walked. John 5:8-9 ESV

    Get up!

When Jesus tells us to do something He gives us the grace we need to do it.

    Change your posture!

    Take up your bed

Own your issues and give them to God or they will own you and give you nothing but grief.

    Walk!

You can’t stay where you are and get where you need to be!

Now that day was the Sabbath. So the Jews said to the man who had been healed, “It is the Sabbath, and it is not lawful for you to take up your bed.” But he answered them, “The man who healed me, that man said to me, ‘Take up your bed, and walk.’” John 5:10-11 ESV

Don’t let your bed call you back to your brokenness.

Afterward Jesus found him in the temple and said to him, “See, you are well! Sin no more, that nothing worse may happen to you.” John 5:14 ESV

  • Love Is A Verb (Pt. 3)

You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. A second is equally important: Love your neighbor as yourself. The entire law and all the demands of the prophets are based on these two commandments.
    Matthew 22:37-38 NLT

If you love only those who love you, what reward is there for that? Even corrupt tax collectors do that much. Matthew 5:46 NLT

Jesus replied, “A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and he fell among robbers, who stripped him and beat him and departed, leaving him half dead. Now by chance a priest was going down that road, and when he saw him he passed by on the other side. So likewise a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. But a Samaritan, as he journeyed, came to where he was, and when he saw him, he had compassion. He went to him and bound up his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he set him on his own animal and brought him to an inn and took care of him. And the next day he took out two denarii and gave them to the innkeeper, saying, ‘Take care of him, and whatever more you spend, I will repay you when I come back.’ Which of these three, do you think, proved to be a neighbor to the man who fell among the robbers?” He said, “The one who showed him mercy.” And Jesus said to him, “You go, and do likewise.” Luke 10:28-37 ESV

Let me give you a new command: Love one another. In the same way I loved you, you love one another. This is how everyone will recognize that you are my disciples, when they see the love you have for each other. John 13:34-35 MSG

The love of God will cause us to love in a way that points others to Jesus.

The greatest way to love someone is introduce them to Jesus and His amazing love.

Connecting and caring are critically linked ways of loving.

Do you think you'll get anywhere in this if you learn all the right words but never do anything? Does merely talking about faith indicate that a person really has it? James 2:14 MSG

The lost world needs less debating and more delivering on the command to love like Jesus.

Faith without works is dead! James 2:17 ESV

Faith’s greatest work is love, and loves greatest gift is grace!

A retreating army makes an easy target for the enemy.

After breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, "Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these?"
"Yes, Master, you know I love you.” Jesus said, "Feed my lambs.” He then asked a second time, "Simon, son of John, do you love me?” "Yes, Master, you know I love you.” Jesus said, "Shepherd my sheep.” Then he said it a third time: "Simon, son of John, do you love me?” Peter was upset that he asked for the third time, "Do you love me?" so he answered, "Master, you know everything there is to know. You've got to know that I love you.” Jesus said, "Feed my sheep. John 21:15-17 MSG

  • Love Is A Verb (Pt. 2)

Dear friends, let us continue to love one another, for love comes from God. Anyone who loves is a child of God and knows God. 1 John 4:7 NLT

    God’s Love Protects you.

In all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 8:37-39 ESV

    God’s Love will Change you.

And I will give you a new heart, and I will put a new spirit in you. I will take out your stony, stubborn heart and give you a tender, responsive heart. Ezekiel 36:26 NLT

God’s love is the only force that can actually change the heart.

    Testimonies

I pray that from his glorious, unlimited resources he will empower you with inner strength through his Spirit. Then Christ will make his home in your hearts as you trust in him. Your roots will grow down into God’s love and keep you strong. And may you have the power to understand, as all God’s people should, how wide, how long, how high, and how deep his love is. May you experience the love of Christ, though it is too great to understand fully. Then you will be made complete with all the fullness of life and power that comes from God.
    Ephesians 3:16-19 NLT

See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are. 1 John 3:1 ESV

    God’s Love has Challenged you.

I chose you before I formed you in the womb; I set you apart before you were born. I appointed you a prophet to the nations. Jeremiah 1:5 HCSB

No longer do I call you servants, for the servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all that I have heard from my Father I have made known to you. You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit and that your fruit should abide, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name, he may give it to you. These things I command you, so that you will love one another. John 15:15-17 ESV

  • Love Is A Verb (Pt. 1)

Love isn’t so much a commentary on how we feel but a description of how we live.

Let love be your highest goal! 1 Corinthians 14:1 NLT

You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. A second is equally important: Love your neighbor as yourself. The entire law and all the demands of the prophets are based on these two commandments.
    Matthew 22:37-38 NLT

It takes knowing God and His love to be able to show the love of God to others.

Dear friends, let us continue to love one another, for love comes from God. Anyone who loves is a child of God and knows God. But anyone who does not love does not know God, for God is love.
    1 John 4:7-8 NLT

The love we show to others comes from the love we know from and have for God.

If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. And if I have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. If I give away all I have, and if I deliver up my body to be burned, but have not love, I gain nothing. Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never ends. 1 Cor. 13:1-8 ESV

The love God calls us to is crazy, challenging, costly, risky, and beautiful and righteous!

You can’t give people Jesus without giving people you.

We know what real love is because Jesus gave up his life for us. So we also ought to give up our lives for our brothers and sisters. If someone has enough money to live well and sees a brother or sister in need but shows no compassion, how can God’s love be in that person? Dear children, let’s not merely say that we love each other; let us show the truth by our actions. 1 John 3:16-18 NLT

It’s possible to sacrifice without real love, but it isn’t possible to love with out real sacrifice.

  • Focus On Faithfulness

Now when Sanballat and Tobiah and Geshem the Arab and the rest of our enemies heard that I had built the wall and that there was no breach left in it (although up to that time I had not set up the doors in the gates), Sanballat and Geshem sent to me, saying, “Come and let us meet together at Hakkephirim in the plain of Ono.” But they intended to do me harm. And I sent messengers to them, saying, “I am doing a great work and I cannot come down. Why should the work stop while I leave it and come down to you?” And they sent to me four times in this way, and I answered them in the same manner. Nehemiah 6:1-4 ESV

It takes focus and faithfulness to walk in Godly freedom and effectiveness.

The enemy loves to disguise drama as diplomacy.

Choose conversations and effort that are most important and most impactful.

Don’t throw your pearls to pigs! They will trample the pearls, then turn and attack you.
    Matthew 7:6 NLT

It takes less effort but more energy to participate in the drama than to actually make a difference.

Then I sent to him, saying, “No such things as you say have been done, for you are inventing them out of your own mind.” For they all wanted to frighten us, thinking, “Their hands will drop from the work, and it will not be done.” But now, O God, strengthen my hands. Nehemiah 6:8-9 ESV

Put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh. Romans 13:14 ESV

“Let us meet together in the house of God, within the temple. Let us close the doors of the temple, for they are coming to kill you. They are coming to kill you by night.” Nehemiah 6:10 ESV

Diplomacy becomes demonic when the deal being struck requires compromising God’s word or will.

Gods plans are only carried out Gods way.

Making exceptions to Godly wisdom is never wise.

But I said, “Should such a man as I run away? And what man such as I could go into the temple and live? I will not go in.” Nehemiah 6:11 ESV

The wall was finished on the 25th day of the month Elul, in 52 days. And when all our enemies heard of it, all the nations around us were afraid and fell greatly in their own esteem, for they perceived that this work had been accomplished with the help of our God. Nehemiah 6:15-16 ESV

When it’s God’s work that’s getting done, God will get the glory.

Unless the Lord builds the house, those who build it labor in vain. Psalms 127:1 ESV

This is Father’s work, and this is the Father’s house.

This is the the Father’s house where hurt and history become a recipe for redemption.

  • The Builder's Generosity

    Life happens everyday to everyone.

Yet true godliness with contentment is itself great wealth. After all, we brought nothing with us when we came into the world, and we can’t take anything with us when we leave it. So if we have enough food and clothing, let us be content. But people who long to be rich fall into temptation and are trapped by many foolish and harmful desires that plunge them into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil. And some people, craving money, have wandered from the true faith and pierced themselves with many sorrows. 1 Timothy 6:6-10 ESV

Then they said, “We will restore these and require nothing from them. We will do as you say.” And I called the priests and made them swear to do as they had promised. Nehemiah 5:12 ESV

Moreover, from the time that I was appointed to be their governor in the land of Judah, from the twentieth year to the thirty-second year of Artaxerxes the king, twelve years, neither I nor my brothers ate the food allowance of the governor. Nehemiah 5:14 ESV (Lead by example.)

Truth learned by example is truth remembered for a lifetime.

We often do what’s easy or obvious, rather than choosing obedient faith.

Tell them to use their money to do good. They should be rich in good works and generous to those in need, always being ready to share with others. By doing this they will be storing up their treasure as a good foundation for the future so that they may experience true life. 1 Timothy 6:18-19 NLT

And I sought for a man among them who should build up the wall and stand in the breach before me for the land, that I should not destroy it, but I found none. Ezekiel 22:30 ESV

And I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?” Then I said, “Here I am! Send me.” Isaiah 6:8 ESV

Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you'll recover your life. I'll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me, watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won't lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you'll learn to live freely and lightly. Matthew 11:28-29 MSG

Sanballat, Tobiah, Geshem the Arab, and the rest of our enemies found out that I had finished rebuilding the wall and that no gaps remained, though we had not yet set up the doors in the gates. So Sanballat and Geshem sent a message asking me to meet them at one of the villages in the plain of Ono. But I realized they were plotting to harm me, so I replied by sending this message to them: “I am engaged in a great work, so I can’t come. Why should I stop working to come and meet with you?” Nehemiah 6:1-3 NLT

There will always be opposition to what God wants to do in and through you.

The wall was finished on the twenty-fifth day of Elul. It had taken fifty-two days. When all our enemies heard the news and all the surrounding nations saw it, our enemies totally lost their nerve. They knew that God was behind this work. Nehemiah 6:15-16 MSG

  • The Builder's Fight

We as a church are currently in the midst of 21 days of prayer and fasting, as well as our annual Kingdom Builders offering. Our 5th birthday is coming up in February 🤯and we are believing God for $50,000! Talk about big vision! Through prayer we have decided $30,000 will go to the things we are called to locally in Wilmington and $20,000 will go globally to the work we do with our partners in Southern Africa. If you would like to give follow the link 828church.com/give and use the pull-down tab for Kingdom Builders. Thank you for building God's kingdom with us!

Now when Sanballat heard that we were building the wall, he was angry and greatly enraged, and he jeered at the Jews. Nehemiah 4:1 ESV

The voice that declares we’re to weak and broken should serve only to remind us of the beauty and power of restoration.

And he said in the presence of his brothers and of the army of Samaria, “What are these feeble Jews doing? Will they restore it for themselves? Will they sacrifice? Will they finish up in a day? Will they revive the stones out of the heaps of rubbish, and burned ones at that?” Nehemiah 4:2 ESV

Tobiah the Ammonite was beside him, and he said, “Yes, what they are building if a fox goes up on it he will break down their stone wall!” Nehemiah 4:3 ESV

What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be[a] against us? Romans 8:31 ESV
Hear, O our God, for we are despised. Turn back their taunt on their own heads and give them up to be plundered in a land where they are captives. Do not cover their guilt, and let not their sin be blotted out from your sight, for they have provoked you to anger in the presence of the builders. Nehemiah 4:4-5 ESV

So we built the wall. And all the wall was joined together to half its height, for the people had a mind to work. Nehemiah 4:6 ESV

But when Sanballat and Tobiah and the Arabs and the Ammonites and the Ashdodites heard that the repairing of the walls of Jerusalem was going forward and that the breaches were beginning to be closed, they were very angry. And they all plotted together to come and fight against Jerusalem and to cause confusion in it. Nehemiah 4:7-8 ESV

The enemy knows he can’t overcome the wall so he attacks the workers.

And we prayed to our God and set a guard as a protection against them day and night. Nehemiah 4:9 ESV

In Judah it was said, “The strength of those who bear the burdens is failing. There is too much rubble. By ourselves we will not be able to rebuild the wall.” And our enemies said, “They will not know or see till we come among them and kill them and stop the work.” At that time the Jews who lived near them came from all directions and said to us ten times, “You must return to us.” Nehemiah 4:10-12 ESV

The safest place to be is the place of obedient trust!

So in the lowest parts of the space behind the wall, in open places, I stationed the people by their clans, with their swords, their spears, and their bows. Nehemiah 4:13 ESV
And I looked and arose and said to the nobles and to the officials and to the rest of the people, “Do not be afraid of them. Remember the Lord, who is great and awesome, and fight for your brothers, your sons, your daughters, your wives, and your homes.” Nehemiah 4:14 ESV

If the battle is personal, the fight should be passionate!

When our enemies heard that it was known to us and that God had frustrated their plan, we all returned to the wall, each to his work. From that day on, half of my servants worked on construction, and half held the spears, shields, bows, and coats of mail. And the leaders stood behind the whole house of Judah, who were building on the wall. Those who carried burdens were loaded in such a way that each labored on the work with one hand and held his weapon with the other. And each of the builders had his sword strapped at his side while he built. The man who sounded the trumpet was beside me. Nehemiah 4:15-18 ESV

And I said to the nobles and to the officials and to the rest of the people, “The work is great and widely spread, and we are separated on the wall, far from one another. In the place where you hear the sound of the trumpet, rally to us there. Our God will fight for us.” Nehemiah 4:19-20 ESV

Worship is a weapon the enemy can’t overcome!

So we labored at the work, and half of them held the spears from the break of dawn until the stars came out. I also said to the people at that time, “Let every man and his servant pass the night within Jerusalem, that they may be a guard for us by night and may labor by day.” So neither I nor my brothers nor my servants nor the men of the guard who followed me, none of us took off our clothes; each kept his weapon at his right hand. Nehemiah 4:21-23 ESV

  • Letters From A King

The constant exposure to perversion, indecency and immorality pose an eternal danger to the heart, identity and security God wills for His children... (carcinogen)

Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. Galatians 5:19-21 ESV

When we make broken choices we live broken lives.

Knowing something is bad for you is a blessing; knowing how to be whole is an inexpressible gift!

Such were some of you, but you were sanctified / justified in the name of Jesus... 1 Cor. 9:11

Truth has to be believed, applied and shared to be impactful.

Comparison and Jealousy that leads to Envy are modern day marketing strategies meant to cause us to spend our resources on idols and icons that can do nothing for us.

God followers who, by His grace, walk in God’s word and wisdom, and who link arms for others, are a modern day Kingdom builders.

I said to the king, “If it pleases the king, let letters be given me to the governors of the province Beyond the River, that they may let me pass through until I come to Judah, and a letter to Asaph, the keeper of the king's forest, that he may give me timber to make beams for the gates of the fortress of the temple, and for the wall of the city, and for the house that I shall occupy.” And the king granted me what I asked, for the good hand of my God was upon me. Nehemiah 2:7-8 ESV

Then I came to the governors of the province Beyond the River and gave them the king's letters. Now the king had sent with me officers of the army and horsemen. But when Sanballat the Horonite and Tobiah the Ammonite servant heard this, it displeased them greatly that someone had come to seek the welfare of the people of Israel. Nehemiah 2:9-10 ESV

Challenges and challengers are a predictable part of the process of positive change.

So I went to Jerusalem and was there three days. Then I arose in the night, I and a few men with me. And I told no one what my God had put into my heart to do for Jerusalem... And the officials did not know where I had gone or what I was doing, and I had not yet told the Jews, the priests, the nobles, the officials, and the rest who were to do the work. Nehemiah 2:11-12 & 16 ESV

The most important work always starts and often stays completely off of the radar.

Then I said to them, “You see the trouble we are in, how Jerusalem lies in ruins with its gates burned. Come, let us build the wall of Jerusalem, that we may no longer suffer derision.” And I told them of the hand of my God that had been upon me for good, and also of the words that the king had spoken to me. And they said, “Let us rise up and build.” So they strengthened their hands for the good work. Nehemiah 2:17-18 ESV

    Send revival, start in me!

But when Sanballat the Horonite and Tobiah the Ammonite servant and Geshem the Arab heard of it, they jeered at us and despised us and said, “What is this thing that you are doing? Are you rebelling against the king?” Then I replied to them, “The God of heaven will make us prosper, and we his servants will arise and build, but you have no portion or right or claim in Jerusalem.” Nehemiah 2:19-20 ESV

The broken wall is compromise, and the rebuilt wall is believing and living God’s word and will as the only way and final say.
