She Doesn't Settle

85: Doing Things That Scare You

Listen Later

While encountering fear is something that we all experience, how we respond to it can vary wildly. In this episode, I want to examine the nature of fear and share with you some strategies, many of which we explore during my Ascend Masterminds, that you can implement to help you face your own personal fears, whatever they are, and channel that energy in positive ways.

I’ll start off by looking at the different types of fear, why we should face them, and how we can respond to them. We’ll also dive into the concept of self-efficacy and how to set yourself up for an efficacious outlook, review some valuable resources, and then I’ll share 5 ways you can face your fears - complete with examples from my own life - and how you can implement them in your life as well. Experiencing fear is inevitable, and can actually prove highly valuable in helping us to achieve our goals – listen in today to learn how.

As mentioned above, doing things that scare us is something that we talk about in my Ascend Mastermind, and, happily, enrollment is now open for the next session, which, in response to some valuable feedback I’ve received, will now be a six month program starting at the end of the summer. If you’re a high achieving entrepreneur or high level professional who is ready to uplevel your health and well-being (mental, emotional, physical) while creating and pursuing goals you actually want then this Mastermind is the perfect opportunity for you. You’ll get to strengthen your habits, get clear on what you want and be held accountable by, and find support among like-minded women as you ascend. Check out the details here: www.kellytravis.net/ascend, and if you would like to hear first hand from someone who has actually gone through one of my Ascend Masterminds, let me know and we can make that happen as well.

As always, if there is ever a topic you would like me to discuss or a guest you’d like me to interview on the podcast, please feel free to contact me at [email protected] - I would love to hear from you!

Quotes:

“While fear is here to protect us, it can also hold us back, because sometimes we fear things that aren't actually a threat.”

“Aristotle said ‘an individual develops courage by doing courageous acts’. It doesn't mean that the fear goes away. It means you just keep going in spite of the fear.”

“People who have performed well in the past doing something tend to believe the same will hold true for the future. So those folks approach difficult tasks, scary tasks, as challenges to be mastered, rather than scary threats that need to be avoided.”

“I love thinking through worst case scenarios, and I do this with my clients all the time...I call it catastrophic thinking.”

“How will you deal with it if that worst thing happens?”

“There's a lot of fear that is not necessarily rational, and by confronting it, that's how we move forward.”

“When we feel fear, the healthy fear, that fear signals that there's something on the line. And sometimes that's a reason to actually take action,  to make the effort to go after that thing.”

“Just like stress and other less pleasant emotions, a certain amount of fear is healthy, and it's beneficial.”

“Our challenge is to determine when to listen to the fear and when to ignore it.”

“Exposure therapy, if you work with a professional, can be really helpful for these bigger things.”

“So that's exposure, right? Putting yourself in situations intentionally that feel safe to practice doing the thing that scares you.”

“We all know that repetition is one of the things that helps us to succeed.”

“To be able to slow down, pay attention to your thoughts, challenge them when they come up, will help you get rid of some of that spiraling.”

“Overthinking is the enemy of action.”

“All the fear goes away. Because you've started, you don't have to think about it anymore.”

“You'll never know what you're capable of, until you regularly go to the edges of your comfort zone.”

“What you had previously felt was uncomfortable, becomes almost natural.”

“Send a note to me to talk about Ascend!”

“Courage is not the absence of fear, it is acting in spite of it.”
