As part of a recent settlement with the family of Breonna Taylor, the Louisville Metro Police Department will implement an officer “early warning system.”

The statue of King Louis the 16th is still in storage. Crews removed it from its base outside Metro Hall several weeks ago. It’s awaiting an assessment on its damages and its ultimate fate is TBD. Kentucky’s new commissioner of education Jason Glass has now officially been in office for a week. Glass comes to Kentucky from serving as superintendent for Jeffco Public Schools, large district near Denver. He’s also served as the top education official for the state of Iowa. He sat down with WFPL News to talk about what it’s been like his first week on the job.

When protesters took to the streets of Louisville beginning in late May, the police presence wasn't just on the ground. It was also in the air. There were no spectators in the stands for this year’s Kentucky Derby, but that didn’t stop a crowd from gathering at Churchill Downs. Louisville was home to protests and counter-protests all day yesterday (Saturday), culminating in crowds surrounding the race track right as Louisville’s biggest event of the year took off.

Last year more than a hundred thousand people were in attendance at Churchill Downs to watch the Kentucky Oaks. This year, the nine fillies ran the one-and-one-eighth mile race at a mostly empty track. Churchill Downs decided not to allow spectators this year, amid a rise in coronavirus cases in Louisville and across the state.

The Run for the Roses will happen without spectators in the stands this year, but that won’t prevent gamblers from placing millions of dollars in bets. In fact, one researcher predicts that even without fans at the track, this year’s Derby could see more money wagered than ever before as gambling moves online. Online gambling has already seen dramatic growth amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The city of Louisville is on edge as residents await a decision on whether the officers who killed Breonna Taylor should be charged. That’s all happening while recent leaks suggest Taylor was closely linked to drug trafficking. As Amina Elahi of member station W-F-P-L in Louisville reports, some say there’s a smear campaign underway.
