Child care centers are allowed to be open in Kentucky, after having been mandated to close in March to protect against the spread of the coronavirus. But many centers still haven’t reopened or have limited capacity due to new health guidelines meant to protect against the virus. As WFPL’s Jess Clark reports, the lack of child care is forcing many parents to make heartbreaking sacrifices.

WFPL News Reporter Ryan Van Velzer is nearly arrested by police amid protests for racial justice in Louisville.

When an LMPD officer kills or fires a gun at someone in Louisville, as they did Breonna Taylor and David McAtee, the officers are put on administrative leave until an investigation clears them of wrongdoing.

But an investigation from the Kentucky Center for Investigative Reporting found in some cases, officers return to regular police duty before the investigation is closed. Reporter Jared Bennett has the story - a note of caution, it contains audio from two police shootings.

In response to protests over the police killing of Breonna Taylor, Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer has called for increased civilian oversight of the police department. But as the Kentucky Center for Investigative Reporting has found, this isn’t the first time the city has tried to quell protests with this exact same promise.

More than 930,000 requests for unemployment benefits have been filed by Kentuckians since early March amid the coronavirus pandemic. The crush of claims has overwhelmed the state’s unemployment insurance system, which had been slashed in recent years amid budget cuts. And Gov. Andy Beshear’s administration has struggled to provide benefits to out-of-work people in a timely manner. Capitol reporter Ryland Barton says the crisis is not unique to Kentucky.

Monuments are coming down around the nation. Here in Kentucky, we’ve seen two statues of men with ties to the confederacy removed. But is this removal of marble, bronze and stone symbolic of something bigger?

Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer, the Public Works Department and Police have all issued apologizes for the mistreatment of protesters belongings when police ordered the removal of an encampment from Jefferson Square Park. The order was issued late Saturday after a man opened fire on demonstrators, killing one man. The order led to tents, sound systems and personal belongings being dumped at a bulk waste drop-off site.
