In Louisville, the Ohio River has something of an image problem. People look at the river and they see the trash. They think about the sewage and industrial waste that ends up in the river. But a trio of development projects could change that. They want to redefine our relationship with the Ohio River, from coal barge causeway to natural resource. WFPL’s Ryan Van Velzer has more.

Earlier this month, the Kentucky Center for Investigative Reporting published Prosecution Declined, a yearlong look at how rape cases are investigated and prosecuted here in Louisville.

The investigation found that only 15 percent of all rapes reported to the Louisville Metro Police Department in 2017 ended in an arrest. Now, we bring you a story from Lexington about a woman who did see her assailant arrested and prosecuted — and what that meant to her.

Cay, a woman we’re referring to only by her nickname, is now 21 and applying to law school. But back in 2016, she was a freshman at the University of Kentucky, having the worst night of her life.

Louisville’s public nuisance ordinance is intended to provide a way to bust up drug houses and crime dens. But police and code enforcement officials have been increasingly focused on residential locations where crimes are reported — regardless of whether the victim or the offender lives there.

Today 29 miles of floodwalls, earthen levees and pump stations are supposed to protect Louisville from the next great flood. So what is the city doing to maintain the system that protects so much life and property? “What we’re doing is a Band-Aid fix,” said Dane Anderson, flood protection manager with the Metropolitan Sewer District. “We’re trying to take that old vehicle and keep it on the road for another couple of years.”
