Breakfast of Champions is one of those rare instances of improving with age. It started as a complete shitshow of ravers who'd forgotten the meaning of the word 'sleep', but it's evolved over the years into a exuberant annual celebration of music and community. Yes, it's still a shitshow, but it's the best shitshow around. 

Instead of playing outside in the sun this year I played inside Mighty. The inside of Breakfast of Champions has traditionally had a darker vibe, with all manner of transgressive behavior going on in the sweaty nooks and crannies of the club. I took this year as an opportunity to play some rougher moombahton/moombahcore stuff that I'd been collecting, paired with some throwbacks and funky stuff, with all tracks tweaked or edited by yours truly. So far 2013 has been a great year for San Francisco, Space Cowboys, and me personally, and I attribute it all to this first mix of the year.

It's horribly unfair, but unfortunately the responsibilities of adulthood sometimes have a knack for getting in the way of a good time. Case in point: Halloween is the bestest holiday ever, and one of my favorite ways to celebrate is by playing a special, ghoulish set at Ghost Ship. This year, however, a couple little things called work and parenthood loomed as obstacles to finding the time to brew my special mix. But thanks to a little black magic I like to call "multi-tasking", I was able to meet my professional and familial obligations, while still weaving together a set of new breaks, old rave classics, along with some spooky surprises. A little more background on our beloved DJ Ball....

One of The Space Cowboys' founding members, the Whoreable DJ 8Ball's (aka 'H8Ball', 'RaveBall') accomplishments are too numerous to list here, aside from which, we don't want to reveal anything that could be later used in court. Suffice to say that 8Ball started spinning in the mid-90s, playing jungle (B'OH!) and, later, breaks at the sort of all night dance parties where ravers in kick pants blew whistles, swirled glowsticks, and eventually collapsed into clenched-jawed human puddles until dawn. These days 8Ball plays all sorts of genres, from breaks to disco, from old school hip hop to new school funk, rock to electro, and all sorts of stuff in-between.

He's played many venues around SF, including the old standbys like Mighty, Shine, 1015, Temple, Wish, DNA Lounge, and The End-up. He was 1/2 responsible for a debaucherous monthly called Bikini Wax at the venue formerly known as Sublouge. He's played in stores while you've shopped, in restaurants while you dined, and at wineries while you've sipped chardonay. He's played in homes, on rooftops and radios, in far-away castles and warehouses, under freeways and underground.

8Ball is also the official voice of Space Cowboys, and responsible for such rants as "Hipster Fixie Vamps", "How to Survive New Year's", "Seemed Like a Good Idea At the Time", and others.
