He's running circles around people...literally. This week's guest on "Run the Race" just ran 500+ laps at a track = more than 125 miles in 24 hours for a race in Georgia! We talk about nutrition (french fries), fighting through pain and injury, how he got into running, why he runs so far, balancing family and training, etc.
(6:11) Dane Talbert, a carpenter in the Columbus GA area, drove a few hours from home to compete in the Stinger 24 hour race, where he won 1st overall with his 129 miles (according to his Garmin watch). He describes the game plan for that race, how french fries became a new Go To food for ultras, (12:02) plus why and how he sets specific speed or distance goals for most races. Dane also had foot issues halfway through that 24 hour race, with a big knot on his left achilles. How did he fight through the pain and get help from his crew? And what about bathroom breaks or sleep?
Being a husband and father, (16:47) he also talks about convincing his wife to allow him to train, balancing passion and running with his family as they have young kids that do their own sports. (19:31) His story about getting into running started a decade ago, when he quickly transitioned from a 5K to a 50 miler, a long race where he couldn't move afterwards! A year after that, Dane also attempted to Run Across Georgia solo, making it more than half of the 262 miles.
(23:14) This impressive runner has advice for you about going further and faster while not getting injured. The key words here are overtraining, hydration, and core work. (27:37) For him, it's easier to run faster but he has to slow down in races like the 24 hour one. (31:24) And where does he get his determination and love for running long distances? His goal is to be the best person he can be in all aspects of his life.
Nutrition and experience are also big, (35:30) as Dane learned the hard way in 2012 at the Georgia Jewel 100 miler, where he threw up for about 20 miles of that, but still ended up finishing 2nd overall! You'll hear that story, lessons learned, (40:33) and his future goals to do better than he did at the Stinger 24 hour race, maybe even going for the US National team at that distance! For now though, he can barely run, still recovering from 500+ times around the track.
(48:27) In the final segments, we have "Food for Thought" about a 24 hour race in NC helping addicts. And do you ever feel like giving up? My "Parting Gift" is a Bible verse about perseverance through trials, then a closing Prayer.
