A Moment of Your Time

94 - “Watercolored” by Caitlin Fischer

Listen Later

Caitlin Fischer is a recent graduate of the Boston University BFA Acting Program with a minor in Environmental Science. As a burn survivor since 8 months old, she understands trauma, identity issues, and standing out more than most. As an actor, she feels called to inspire others to heal through the characters she embodies. Most characters her age grapple with the same core issues, only through different extraordinary circumstances, but are only portrayed through a narrow “type” of actor. Burn victims in the entertainment industry, on the other hand, are only viewed with pity, fear, or shame. She is ready to change that. She chooses not to be defined by my scars, but rather allows her experience to positively inform her life choices. She leads by example by not hiding who she is but not branding herself with trauma. Caitlin hopes to, once again, lead by example in the entertainment industry and embody a non-traditional experience within both traditional and non-traditional characters/stories. Caitlin’s other passions include singing, musical arranging, battling climate change, weightlifting, and cooking new vegan meals everyday.

More About the Piece:

Inspired by her other classmates’ use of spoken word poetry to grapple with their past, Caitlin drafted a version of this piece in March 2017 during her freshman year at Boston University. She had never really thought this in-depth about her experience, how it has affected her throughout her life, and how it has shaped her into the young woman she is today. She began healing from this experience and hopes to inspire others to do the same through this piece. She revised the poem to coincide with her current feelings/experience in April 2019 while studying abroad in Arezzo, Italy. She performed this poem with an accompanying silent movement piece in Italy, soon translating this into a short film for her friend’s art exhibition in Paris, “The 98: In Bloom”. The individual experience, while very personal and subjective, almost always has universal themes that tap in to the entire human experience. This is the source of empathy and, therefore, change. Let’s use our past to come together as human beings and begin healing, together.
