Jesus as a twelve-year-old boy went through what was called a bar-mitzvah, a term which means “son of the law.” Every Jewish boy went through a process in which his father made sure that he knew the wisdom of God on his journey to manhood. After this rite of passage, a twelve year old boy was no longer considered a boy but a man. He was thought of as a man and was expected to behave as a man. That’s why Jesus at age twelve was in the Temple engaging in conversation with the religious and political leaders of His day.
