RAJA SHEHADEH is Palestine’s leading writer. He is also a lawyer and the founder of the pioneering Palestinian human rights organization Al-Haq. Shehadeh is the author of several acclaimed books including Strangers in the House, Occupation Diaries, and Palestinian Walks (which won the prestigious Orwell Prize). In 2022 he was named an International Writer of the Royal Society of Literature. 

Raja is releasing his latest book on March 21:

I have just read read a galley of it in preparation for having him on the podcast.

WHO BY FIRE: Leonard Cohen in the Sinai

In 1973, Leonard Cohen announced he was done with music for good. The same year, in October, war broke out in Israel.

The Yom Kippur War would become the bloodiest in Israel’s young history—and Cohen was there to witness it. As the war broke out, he left his home on the Greek island of Hydra to fly into the warzone.

Leonard Cohen did not say much about why he went to the front. What we know is that in the months that followed, he would write “Who By Fire” and "Lover Lover Lover."

So what was it that happened in the desert in October of 1973 between a depressed musician and young soldiers going off to battle? How did it remake Leonard Cohen? How did it transform those who heard him play? And how did the war transform Israel itself?

Those are some of the questions Matti Friedman explains in his beautiful new book Who By Fire: Leonard Cohen in the Sinai.

Matti and I get into some areas worth thinking about: Non violence, pacifism, militarism, the Poets prerogative, loyalty...

Bill Ashley and two new Henry Miller titles!
The Heaven Beyond Heaven and Jupiter In All His Phases
Published by Henry Miller's Unique Books owned and operated by Bill Ashley.

Bill Ashley is very well known in the Miller world for having published, together with Roger Jackson, the remarkable Bibliography of Miller's complete works.

Bill is also a board member emeritus of the HMML having been instrumental in setting up the Non-Profit organization that is now the Library in 1998.

We talk of the books, publishing in 2022, collecting Miller and more...
