The Blitz brought about unimaginable horrors, one of which the Bethnal Green Tube Disaster. On March 3 1943, 173 locals rushed to Bethnal Green tube station amid an air-raid alarm and were crushed to death while seeking shelter. Ray Lechmere barely escaped with his life. Now, at 91, he chokes up as he recalls seeing piles of bodies “from the ceiling to the bottom” and the agonizing wait for news about his loved ones, who were missing after the incident. It stands as a stark reminder that the ravages of war extend well beyond the battlefront.
