Publisher's Summary:
Award-winning author Miriam Toews delivers a funny novel about the smallest town in Canada. Algren, Manitoba, has 1,500 residents, and its obsessive mayor intends to keep it that way. For if Algren dips below 1,500, it becomes a village - and the prime minister has only promised to visit Canada's smallest town.

Critic Reviews:
"A mellow summer interlude that allows readers to revel in the not-so-simple pleasures of small-town life, and consider what matters most." (Booklist)

Talented, but Ho Hum!
The weaving of characters around the central character of the mayor is very well done. In my opinion, this novel is well-written. But the themes are mundane, bodering upon trivial. That is, there is little here that isn't experienced by average people in their daily lives. I believe the "domestic" woman reader would prefer its homey charm, but for me it often verged upon boring.
Lucky to have discovered Miriam Toews
My Current Favorite Author. This author writes with a great deal of insight and empathy without being maudlin or unbelievable. AND, she's witty and intelligent. I recommend reading everything she has written (non-paid endorsement)! I'd add that she might especially appeal to adolescent girls and young women, who might be struggling with their own "life issues." I found Ms. Toews particularly "in touch with" the emotional lives of children. Her writing style is engaging and not pretentious.
Not quite sure!
I love Miriam Toews books. I'm finding this audio book a little harder to get into. I'm not sure if it's just me but I am struggling with the voice of the reader. I will keep persevering and it will undoubtedly get better.
Fun, Quirky Canadian Story
After her fatherâs heart attack, single mom, Knute and her four-year-old daughter move back to the small town of Algren, Manitoba to help her mother look after him. Itâs not a bad move for Knute, as not much has gone well for her in Winnipeg. Meanwhile, Algrenâs mayor, Hosea Funk, is determined to win praise and acknowledgement for Algren as Canadaâs official smallest town. The winner will receive a visit from the prime minister. Due to his motherâs death bed comment, Hosea believes the man is his father. The trouble is, people keep moving to and dying in Algren, which causes Hosea no end of trouble to maintain the crucial population number of 1,500.
A Boy of Good Breeding is a lovely, light look at family and unfulfilled dreams. Setting is key to this story, and the eccentric characters are funny and entertaining. Hoseaâs a little over the top, but I found myself sympathizing with his odd quest. If youâre looking for a fun, light Canadian story, then this is a great choice.
Hilarious, big-hearted, small town story
After the success of Canadian author Toews' award winning "A Complicated Kindness," some of her earlier novels have been released in the U.S.
