Rio Hondo Prep opens 2026 on the road in Montebello to take on Schurr High School. After 3 straight CIF Championships, the Kares have a massive target on their back, and the Spartans would like nothing better than to strike down the Champs in their first game. To help us kickoff the season opener, we are joined by Jason Ramos from the Class of 1999. Jason won 3 Football Titles himself from 1996-1998 and was one of Rio's fiercest warriors of all time. He is now the Executive Director of the YMCA in South Pasadena / San Marino while continuing to follow the great tradition that is Rio Hondo Football.

Rio Hondo Prep competed against Baldwin Park in a Preseason Scrimmage on Friday that prepared both teams for their Season Openers next week. There were plenty of good moments for RHP as well as much room for improvement in certain aspects. Head Coach Mark Carson makes his first weekly appearance on the show to recap not just the Scrimmage but also the entire Summer of preparation. His Kares are excited to kickoff another season against Schurr in Week 0. We need all of the Rio faithful out in full force as the Quest for #18 officially begins.

The Kares will head over to Baldwin Park High School on Friday to compete against the Braves a week before the season officially kicks off. Both teams have very tough opponents in their openers and are looking to get some quality work in to see where they are at after a long summer of preparation. Joining us today is the Head Coach of Baldwin Park, Robert Maxie. Coach Maxie has been at BP since 2023 and led the Braves to the Division 11 Championship Game last season. You can hear him on weekly Twitter Spaces throughout the fall as local coaches and media members preview the area's biggest games. We look forward to where the Kares and Braves finish up this year but they will get things started off with a friendly Friday night scrimmage that will get them ready for their 2026 Campaigns.

Jason Negro has been the Head Coach at St John Bosco in Bellflower since 2010. As a proud alum from 1991, he has led the Braves to 4 CIF Southern Section championships, 4 California State titles, and was voted National Champions 3 times. Coach Negro serves on the CIF-SS Football Coaches Advisory Committee alongside Coach Carson from Rio Hondo Prep. We discuss a wide range of topics about high school football in Southern California as we finally reach the month of August. Coach Jason Negro offers wisdom and insight into a fun filled conversation to get you ready for the 2026 Kickoff.

On August 21st, Rio Hondo Prep opens their season on the road in Montebello against the Schurr Spartans. St Bosco is ranked #1 in the country and will travel to Las Vegas on 8/21 to take on #2 nationally ranked Bishop Gorman.

Mike West has been the Commissioner of the CIF Southern Section since 2023. His road to overseeing the largest governing body of high school athletics in California has included stops as both an Athletic Trainer and Principal at many institutions. Commissioner West offers his insight into the operating procedures of the many different sports in SoCal. We also discuss how Rio Hondo Prep continues to be an outlier with the current playoff system while never making any excuses for the obstacles they've faced.

Gary Lunney was a beloved football coach and music teacher at Rio Hondo Prep for over 40 years. He was a genius as the Defensive Coordinator on the gridiron. Mr Lunney was also an amazing vocalist and talented artist with the paintbrush. His legacy continues down at Rio to this day with many family members who still work at the school. Before he lived alife of service at RHP, Gary Lunney was drafted into the Army and served a year of intense combat in Vietnam. As a Sergeant, he bravely led his squad on countless dangerous missions and airborne assaults as they faced the harsh jungle conditions in Southeast Asia. Years later, Sergeant Lunney wrote a book titled "Duty Calls" about his time in the war. On this 4th of July, we honor a man who has meant so much to the many lives he touched during his incredible life. His children Lindy, Robert, and Ginger begin our commemoration with some opening remarks about their dad. Then, his oldest son Tim offers commentary before each chapter as I read the book "Duty Calls" in its entirety. As we celebrate the 250th Birthday of America, thank you to Gary Lunney for his selfless sacrifice for our country and to all the brave souls who have served in our military. Happy Independence Day!
