Last October, the city hired the first ever Independent Police Monitor. This came after the 2020 creation of the Civilian Oversight Board. What has the board been doing? How can the public interact with them? Shadayra Kilfoy-Flores, the chair of the board, joins Esty Dinur to answer these questions.
They discuss the 3 years since the creation of the Police Civilian Oversight Board, the role of community engagement for violence disruption, and the recent deadly shooting of a Madison teenager.
Shadayra Kilfoy-Flores is an international artist and cultural consultant known for her Sister-City work with Tepatitlan, Mexico. She is the Dane County Organizer for FREE, a transformative justice organization who demands dignity for judicial system impacted women and girls. She currently sits as the Chair of the City of Madison’s Police Civilian Oversight Board. She is also a Water Protector advocating for indigenous treaty rights and clean water for all. When Shadayra is not advocating for our rights, you can find her gardening with Rooted at Badger Rock Community center, where she is a Garden Organizer, guest instructor and sits on their Community Advisory Board.
