A Public Affair

A Critical History of White Feminism

Listen Later

“White feminism is not the only feminism, and it never has been.”
That’s Koa Beck, author of a new book tracing the history of white feminism and the queer and BIPOC women and non-binary people left behind in its wake.
Today, she joins Ali on the show to talk about the ideological weaknesses of white feminism—how it’s embedded in colonialism, capitalism, and white supremacy—and the way forward for the movement.
Koa Beck is the former editor-in-chief of Jezebel and co-host of “The #MeToo Memos” on WNYC’s The Takeaway. She is the author of White Feminism: From the Suffragettes to Influencers and Who They Leave Behind (Atria Books, 2021).
