There's no debating the fact that these are difficult days. From wars in foreign lands, antisemitism, immoral behavior accepted and applauded, abortions, and the breakdown of the family are just a few things we could point to as evidence of that. We’ve spent several months going verse by verse through the gospel of Matthew. We’ve now reached a pivotal section in this account of the Lord’s earthly life and ministry. In chapter sixteen we have a very touching scene where Mary is worshipping at the feet of Jesus. While some were critical of her, Jesus saw it for what it truly was… pure worship. And it should inspire us all to do the same.

False teaching is prevalent. It’s been in the church since the beginning and surely making its way through the church at the present time! But how are we to face these false teachers? The same way Timothy did! Today on a Daily Walk we recall a time in the early church when Timothy needed to confront the false teachers. Paul in writing to Timothy encourages him to look to the soldier, athlete and farmer for characteristics to apply to his life and ministry. And these are words we really need to hear today too. For instance the soldier follows the commands of his superior officer without hesitation. And that should be our response to God’s commands to us! Or how about the farmer, who needs patience when dealing with his crops. You can be sure patience will be needed in our lives from time to time!

Agriculture is a huge part of America’s heritage. It’s amazing to consider that farmers are willing to invest so much time and effort into the land and their crops, knowing that they won’t see any income until harvest time. And even then, a sudden hailstorm, or unseasonable weather can destroy all of their hard work. That sort of diligent commitment is necessary in the Christian life as well. In fact, the apostle Paul used the metaphors of a hard working farmer, athlete and soldier to show us what Christian life and ministry is to be like.
