In our study of the Scriptures we run across rather puzzling passages that leave us wondering, How in the world does that apply to us in the 21st century? And I think it’s safe to say First Corinthians chapter eleven is one such place. Here the subject of head coverings comes up. There were some women in the church at

Corinth who chose not to wear head coverings and this caused quite a stir. In that culture it was a sign she was not following the leadership of her husband. Well here we are centuries later and obviously that’s no longer a cultural norm. So do we toss this passage out thinking it no longer applies? Actually pastor John Randall says it has something very important to say to us.

The Jewish customs in the apostle Paul’s day were quite a bit different than what we find in today’s culture. The city of Corinth was engaged in idolatry big time. There were also several pagan temples in the city and each one was quite popular. You can see why the apostle Paul felt it was so important to get the message of Christ to these people, that their hopes shouldn’t be placed in things made by the hands of men, but rather in the hands of the One who made men. Today we learn that Christian liberty doesn’t include the freedom to sin!
