Today the decade under the influence crew watches and reviews the iconic  All the presidents men 1976

Staring Dustin Hoffman and Jeremiah Johnson A.K.A Robert Redford. These two budding journalists enjoy talking to, getting lectured by, interviewing, and getting hung up on by about every great character actor working at the time! 

AND they expose the watergate break in and cover up, that caused president Nixon to resign from office in 1974.

Enjoy also no computers and loud ass typing, also smoking, fluorescent lighting, phone books, and more smoking.

So Rorschach ( Jackie earl Haley), the guy from Frequency (Dennis Quaid), the guy from home alone (Daniel Stern),and the guy from fade to black( Dennis Christopher), all jump into a quarry!

For Dennis Christopher I would like to say “the guy from breaking away!” but that feels weird here in my intro to our podcast of BREAKING AWAY! (1979)

Still, this is my birthday podcast and I chose this film because I love it, 

the great coming of age as a “townie” in an Indiana college town, commercial for bicycles and how to deal with the brewing issues of class struggle, film that it is! 

Oh also it’s kind of nuts with it’s , I can’t handle this town and it’s depression rain, so I must worship Italy, Italian cyclists, and full on pretend to be Italian. Even to my girlfriend.

That’s not going to ever be a problem. 

Acting is great in this especially the character acting of Mom (Barbara Barrie) and Dad a.k.a (REFUND!) Paul Dooley. Oh yeah, directed by the competent Peter Yates (KRULL!)

As we trudge through the sea of mustaches amazing fierce outfits, social commentary, and an always present bottle of JB scotch, we have decided to take you with us. More than we already were.

Today we review and rate the stuntman 1980 bad news bears breaking training ( I’ve still got that damned song in my head) 1977 Rollercoaster 1977 and lastly captain milkshake 1970

Usually don’t do 1970 films cause they were filmed in 69, which is of course why we include films from 1980

Also 1970 films are too dang hippie. This film is no exception

In today’s episode we, your magically delicious DUI ( a decade under the influence, no we don’t drive drunk, we just watch 70’s films) crew, review and rate  4 films 

and they are. Beneath the planet of the apes 1970 (yes the one with the hologram from the 1138)

1971 (amazing buried gay gem starring Rue From the golden girls, buck from buck Rogers and the guy without a radio show on WKRP) and lastly 1972’s the hot rock, a diamond heist anxiety dream from director Peter Yates.

Here we give reviews of the human factor 1979 Otto preminger, and the “welcome to Jurassic park”  guy. Black Sunday 1977 John Frankenheimer. Chilly scenes of winter 1979, with John Heard n a guy from animal house. Oh yeah and a lil bit of the 

Night digger 1971 starring Patricia Neal.

I’ll say this much the 2 I was most excited about here were the worst of the bunch, and new to dvd

In this episode we watch and review a vhs copy of thx 1138, happily, since the Lucas remaster and ALL of Lucas’s “special editions”

are in this humble reviewers opinion (shite). So fire up yer top loaders with us and enjoy ALL of the blessings of the state, and the masses. 

My time is yours! I love thx 1138, also I’m afraid it’s still quite relevant n all that sadly. Requesting a mind lock for my severe as F sedation depletion. As you know this is lucas’s remake of Lucas’s student film. This is key to understanding one of basic formulas for early 70’s films. The huge budget blockbusters studios kept making kept sucking n losing money, then a drugged out independent  low budget hippie movie (easy rider) makes a ton o dough, and none of them get it, but they do like the bread. So they basically hang around film schools looking for weirdos to throw a lil money at and make a ton. 

Not so much with this dystopian nugget but in general. 

Featuring the figure it out guy from Halloween, the great santini guy, a cool car, and oh my god that AMAZING ass motorcycle stunt.

In 1971 Roger Ebert of the Chicago sun times gives this film 4 stars he writes "One of the reasons it works, and is indeed a definitive reflection of America's darker moods, is that it breaks audiences down into isolated individuals, vulnerable and uncertain. Most movies create a temporary sort of democracy, a community of strangers there in the darkened theater. Not this one. The movie seems to be saying that New York City has a similar effect on its citizens, and that it will get you if you don't watch out." Gene Siskel of the Chicago Tribune also awarded four stars and called it "a mean little comedy that made me laugh and then think, 'God, how could I laugh at that. 

This like oh oh oh so very many 70’s films is based on a play, and as pretty much always you can tell, AND that don bother me.
