Many an organisation has been consumed by its own bureaucracy. It grows and then there are committees and dysfunctional management structures and before you know it, it topples over. I remember being part of a football team once ? and we didn’t win a game all season. Can I tell you ? morale at training and on the weekend was really low. We were ? well, losers. There’s nothing worse than being a square peg in a round hole. And in this thing called church ? that should never, ever be the case. God’s made us a certain way, to do certain things. Jesus once told His disciples that His plan for them was to become fishers of men ? of people. And then, then He proceeded to turn their worlds upside down ? in showing them how. In that wonderful British comedy 'Yes Prime Minister' a wise old civil servant said to a junior own ? 'Remember, politicians love activity ? it’s their substitute for achievement.' You know ? I wonder, I wonder if that doesn’t apply to a few churches around the place. We busy ourselves with activity ? but does it have any real impact? By and large the only real problem I’ve ever found with church ? is the other people. If it weren’t for them, church would be a delight. Really. No arguments. No different opinions. No different theologies. Yep ? pretty much ? I’ve come to the conclusion that church would be just fantastic, without all those other people! The easiest thing to do is to snipe at this thing they call church from the outside. And, if the truth be known, a whole bunch of people are prone to sniping at it from the inside too. They’re the ones, who, instead of putting their roots down into the fertile soil of community ? well, they’re like 'pot bound' Christians.
