We arrive at our passage today with massive uncertainty. Famine has its grip on the region. Jacob has lost another son – Simeon was left in Egypt, hostage to the “lord of the land” (42:33). The food is running out… If something is not done, the line of Jacob will end and the promises of God blessing the entire world through him will fail.
