What you didn't know about TV news
I had lots of fun reading this book. It combines a satirical look at the TV news industry with the picaresque adventures of a couple banished from a Minneapolis TV news studio. When they hit the road in search of new journalistic exploits, they wind up on the drab plains of Wyoming, encountering a series of colorful characters along the way. Jim Newmanâs precise descriptions, ear for dialogue, and ironic humor make this a fast read. His well constructed scenes are very visual, which makes me hope he adapts this into a screen play â Iâd love to see the movie. Mr. Newman exposes the ample flaws of his characters but is generous to them nonetheless, and even the greedy, delusional owner of WEE-TV has his humanity. I laughed out loud plenty of times, and look forward to more from this author.
Newsroom Odyssey
A Habit of Mind is a fast paced caricature of a newsroom crew that reads like a television show. The author takes you right into the scene with action and dialogue...very little set up of background. I was impressed with how the characters became real with mostly dialogue to idendtify their personalities. They are a snarky bunch...lots of competiveness and back biting and it makes for a comedic scene. I liked the odyssey of the main characters and the author has sketched out some funny and original situations for the newsroom crew to venture into. In the end Doug Pepper and his questionable love interest, Tanya, will go on to figure out where they are in life. Perhaps Mr. Newman will write another follow up and perhaps this could be a television show.

Fun, snarky expose on the personalities and foibles of a Midwest news team. I liked how raw and naked the characters were and how they found out a little about themselves and each other on their journey. Great work by a debut author who I hope writes another soon.
