This isn't John Wayne. Lone Star is just a beer. Forget about the Alamo. Here are a trio of Texas tales of terror spun from the fevered brain of a nightmare-riding cowboy.
Let me tell you about the three tales.
Have you wondered what sort of a cargo is in those big 18-wheeler rigs that prowl the midnight highways? In "North of Bigfoot, Bound for Memphis" I answer that wonder with a what-if that will leave you wishing you hadn't asked.
Have you ever stepped in bubblegum? Ever stuck your fingers together with Krazy Glue? Ever stepped in sheep dip and tried to shake the stink off? Stick your nose in the pages of "Jumping Chollo Will Not Die" and find out what funk really is.
If you have any brain cells left after subjecting yourself to those first two yarns then wrap your brain around the Frankenstein-influenced tale "Two Good Hands and a Hold-Out".
The eyes of Texas have never looked so bloodshot.

Crazy-Good Stories
A Hat Full of Stories by Steve Vernon is an absolute blast. It contains three short stories that are each Weird Westerns in their own right. What takes these stories and transforms them from ordinary is the singular voice that Vernon used to tell them in. These are tall tales told in bars and around campfires, growing each and every time they are told.
There are lines that you are going to want to highlight and come back to on every page. It's a form of backwoods storytelling where the metaphors are bolder and bigger than you could imagine. When the trailer doors swing open its like the crack of judgment day and then there was the kind of frog drowning rain that made a man think of building arks and gathering animals. And then there's the girl with a face that'd make a freight train think about taking a long walk down a dirt road.
These stories are irreverent. They are boldly told and take you on a journey hitch hiking on lonely roads where things seem to happen. The stories have bewitching ladies and no-good grifting losers. There are angels and devils and sins and sinners and bus rides with monsters and cold-hearted bastards. There are Main Street gunfights and brain-stealing thugs. Just chock full of good stuff.
A hat full.
These were 3 great stories. The first was sad and kind of wistful. Mostly because I've always felt sorry for Judas, because he only did what he'd been born to do. His whole life was leading up to that one point. The second story was hilarious. Jumping chollos will not die left me sputtering and giggling. My first thought was, does Steve know what a Chollo really is? Yep, he does! And he uses the comparisons to a weed in a very witty way. The third story was good, but nothing to write home about. I would highly recommend this collection of stories and most certainly this author.
3 great stories

Spooky,Weird.Brainless and Awesome all at the Same Time
I really enjoyed all 3 Short stories. They were very different then anything I have ever read. Each story was exceptionally written Book #1 was kind of spooky and makes you think about how you lived your life and how a Black Truck and Driver could change your life. Book#2 was totally weird but a good weird I will never ride a bus again and if you are greedy Look out!!!! Book # 3 Had me thinking no brain but yet he was able to talk walk and spook me out.
