Many parents plate food for their children, choosing what and how much they will eat. Unfortunately, this can be problematic. While some kids are okay with their food being plated for them, others are not. Plating may feel controlling or restrictive to kids and they may react in unhealthy ways, such as overeating or favoring unhealthy foods over healthy foods. Parents who pate for their kids may also overestimate appropriate portion sizes.
The cornerstone of family nutrition is family meals - the family sitting at the table together for a meal. Family meals can promote healthy eating and be a mediator of health and wellness for children.
Studies have found a pattern of positive associations between family meals and child health in infants, toddlers, and older children. Family meals may lead to less fussiness and emotional eating, more food enjoyment, and better nutrient intake.
