Story Transcript:

En: The frost blew through the city streets of Ljubljana as Anže set out for the central market.

Sl: Danes je bil poseben dan – predvečer svetega Miklavža, ko otroci pišejo pisma in se veselijo sladkih presenečenj.
En: Today was a special day—the eve of St. Nicholas, when children write letters and look forward to sweet surprises.

En: Anže wanted to make sure this year's celebrations would be unforgettable for his children, Mateja and Nejc.

En: However, as he walked, he felt the burden of financial worries that had been pressing on them lately.

Sl: Tržnica je bila živahna, polna ljudi.
En: The market was lively and full of people.

Sl: Iz stojnica je dišalo po cimetu in kuhanem vinu, lučke so svetile vsepovsod.
En: The stands smelled of cinnamon and mulled wine, and lights were shining everywhere.

Sl: Kmetje so ponujali domače jabolka, orehe, in sveže pečen kruh.
En: Farmers were offering homemade apples, walnuts, and freshly baked bread.

En: Anže knew he had to be careful to spend every euro wisely.

En: His first goal was to buy all the necessary ingredients for the festive dinner.

En: At a stand with fresh vegetables, he was momentarily overcome by memories of past years when things were simpler.

Sl: Hitro se je zbral in kupil nekaj krompirja, zelja in korenčka.
En: He quickly composed himself and bought some potatoes, cabbage, and carrots.

En: Just enough to have enough for preparing the family dinner.

En: Then he set his sights on another stand where he needed to buy gifts.

Sl: Vnaprej je vedel, kaj si želita Mateja in Nejc.
En: He already knew what Mateja and Nejc wanted.

En: Mateja would be thrilled with a bouncy ball, Nejc with a set of wooden blocks.

En: But when he saw the prices, his heart sank.

En: The gifts were more expensive than he had anticipated.

Sl: Anže je tehtal odločitve.
En: Anže weighed his decisions.

Sl: Kupiti eno darilo in drugega pustiti brez ali najti drugo rešitev.
En: To buy one gift and leave the other without, or to find another solution.

En: He didn't want either child to be disappointed.

En: He recalled his own childhood and how St. Nicholas always brought small yet precious moments of happiness for him.

Sl: Z vso ljubeznijo in malo več kreativnosti se je odpravil na zadnjo stojnico, kjer so prodajali barvne papirje in trakove.
En: With all his love and a bit more creativity, he headed to the last stand, where they sold colorful papers and ribbons.

Sl: Kupil je nekaj teh drobnarij s preostalim denarjem.
En: He bought some of these little things with the remaining money.

Sl: Na poti domov je v pekarni kupil še nekaj svežih piškotov.
En: On the way home, he stopped at the bakery to buy some fresh cookies.

Sl: Doma je Anže pripravil majhne darilne kartice.
En: At home, Anže prepared small gift cards.

Sl: Z Matejo in Nejcem je pekel piškote in jih skupaj okrasil.
En: He baked cookies with Mateja and Nejc and decorated them together.

Sl: Ko sta otroka videla darilca, sta bila očarana.
En: When the children saw the small gifts, they were enchanted.

En: Anže explained to them that the true meaning of the holiday lies in the love we share with each other, not in the value of the gifts.

Sl: Skupaj so preživeli čudovit večer ob smehu in pravljicah.
En: They spent a wonderful evening together filled with laughter and stories.

En: Anže realized that moments spent with family are priceless.

En: With love, all obstacles can be overcome.

En: The children fell asleep with smiles on their faces, and Anže contentedly turned off the lights, knowing he had done the best he could.
