A Public Affair

A History of ACT UP and AIDS Activism

Listen Later

It’s been almost thirty-five years since, in the midst of a different pandemic, a group of LGBT activists and people living with AIDS in New York came together in a gathering that would kick off one of the most important social movements of the twentieth century.
For today’s show, guest host Karma Chávez dives into the history of ACT UP, or AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power, with historian and activist Sarah Schulman.
Sarah Schulman is a writer, queer activist, and AIDS historian. She is professor of humanities at The City University of New York, College of Staten Island and author of many books, most recently Let the Record Show: A Political History of ACT UP New York, 1987–1993 (Farrar, Straus & Giroux, 2021).
