After the Nirnaeth Arnoediad, Húrin- a great man of the Edain- was captured by Morgoth and was greatly pressed for information. Húrin was brought before Morgoth, for he had learnt from his spies that Húrin was friends with Turgon, and was tortured for the secret of Gondolin's location. When he would not break, Morgoth cursed him and all his kin. The Dark Lord then chained Húrin to a chair high on the slopes of Thangorodrim where, through Morgoth's sorcery, he could watch the tragedies that would befall his family. However Morgoth concealed much of Túrin's deeds and what Húrin saw was contorted, lies mixed with the truth

So there may have been peace and joy in Doriath, but Carcharoth was discovered, and a hunting party composed of Thingol, Beren, Beleg Cúthalion, Mablung, and Huan was sent to slay the beast. During the hunt, Thingol was nearly slain, but Beren saved him, at the cost of a mortal wound. Huan then slew Carcharoth, but was himself fatally wounded. Coming to Beren, Huan spoke for the third and final time, bidding him farewell. There died Huan, hound of the Valar. The Silmaril was cut from Carcharoth's burned flesh, and Beren presented it at last to Thingol, saying "Now the Quest is achieved". Lúthien bade Beren await her beyond the Western Sea. Looking upon her one last time, Beren died of his wounds, and his spirit found its way into the west, to the shores of the Outer Sea. Through grief, the spirit of Lúthien fled its body at the first breaking of Spring in F.A. 467 and came to the Halls of Mandos. There she sang a song of such woe, and beauty, and lamentation, that even Mandos was moved to pity. He summoned Beren's spirit, and there the two were reunited. But it was not within the power of Mandos to change the fates of the Children of Ilúvatar, so he went to Manwë, who sought counsel from Eru in his innermost thought, where the will of Ilúvatar was revealed to him...

The Quest for the Silmaril was the pursuit of Beren Erchamion for a Silmaril from the Iron Crown of Morgoth during the First Age. This was the price set upon Beren by Thingol, King of Doriath, for his daughter Lúthien's hand in marriage. Beren was aided in the Quest by Lúthien herself, King Finrod Felagund of Nargothrond, Edrahil, and Huan the Hound of Valinor.

Update on season 3 of Rings of Power and what we know so far.

On a winter's night, Morgoth sent out rivers of flame from Thangorodrim, and the Mountains of Iron spewed fires and deadly fumes. The flames consumed the plain of Ard-galen, which was renamed Anfauglith. Many Elves perished as they tried to escape the fire, and the confusion caused by the flame and smoke hindered the defenders that watched Angband. Then Morgoth sent forth his armies, led by Glaurung, first of the Urulóki. Behind Glaurung came Balrogs and multitudes of Orcs, and they slaughtered anyone they came across. After a year of fighting, when Fingolfin, the High King of the Noldor, saw what he believed to be the utter ruin of the Noldor, he rode in anger across the dust of Anfauglith and challenged Morgoth to single combat. At the doors of Angband itself they fought a great duel. Fingolfin's sword, Ringil, wounded Morgoth seven times. Yet he was felled by Morgoth's hammer, Grond, and crushed by Morgoth's mighty foot. Fingolfin's body was saved by Thorondor King of Eagles and brought into the mountaintops north of Gondolin. There Turgon his son built a cairn over his body.

Fëanor and his followers returned to Middle-earth in Y.T. 1497, landing in Lammoth. There they burnt the ships at a place known now as Losgar. The host went up the Firth of Drengist and passed through where it pierced the Ered Lómin into Hithlum and encamped on the northern shore of Lake Mithrim.

The burning of the ships at Losgar were noticed by Fingolfin but also by the watchers of Morgoth. Morgoth sent a host of Orcs and werewolves through the passes of the Ered Wethrin for a surprise attack hoping to destroy the Noldor before they could establish themselves.

Fingolfin and his people also made their way into Beleriand across the Helcaraxë
