It’s easy to get trapped by the things of the world today. It’s easy to let the call of the world convince you everything is okay. But you know better. If you know God and have Him in your heart, you know He writes His laws on your heart and has standards for you that will transform you from the pattern of this world to the pattern of His kingdom. He wants you to look like Him when He return. He wants you to get ready to meet Him and not have to take time to prepare yourself.

You’ve been hearing about faith and the need to take action to demonstrate your faith the last few days. Hezekiah’s story shows again the power faith with action can have against insurmountable obstacles. Sennacherib’s message was true. No other nation had stood against Assyria’s might. They were the dominant force in the world at the time. They took the idols of the nations they defeated and threw them into fires built with the wood of the altars and temples they destroyed. No one and no gods they came across could stand up to them.

But Sennacherib had not advanced against any who believed in the Hezekiah's God. None of the nations he faced worshiped the One True God, Jehovah, the Eternal One, Commander of the angel armies. When God releases His forces in defense of His people, He wins. Period. When He brandishes His sword, the mightest fall to the face in fear because they know the outcome of the fight.

James understands human nature. He recognizes the heart of the problem people have with following God. Most often the difficulty is selfishness. You need look no further than children to see how sin springs up in the lives of people everywhere.“Me. Mine. I. That belongs to Me. I want that. I don’t want to share.” Little ones show how selfish people are from birth.

It doesn’t get better as they grow older. Most people continue on their life of selfishness despite God's commands to the contrary. They want what their neighbor has. They want bigger, better, more. They want the newer car, the bigger house, the better office, the higher pay. They want more. For what purpose? Just because…

When you put your trust in God and understand who He is, you find fear slips away in every circumstance. You can laugh in the face of danger because you know He is greater than your greatest enemy. He is better than your biggest obstacle. He’s in the business of doing the impossible. He is ready to show you His care and His wisdom. Listen to Him instead of the world and you will find joy in your life. You’ll find the baubles the world offers meaningless in the greater scheme of life. You’ll find His path full of the real treasures you seek, treasures that last a life time and beyond.

Faith always comes first. James doesn’t say faith is not necessary, it is. Faith is paramount in walking with God. But understand that faith without works really isn’t faith. Faith demonstrates itself through the works you do. Faith without works only amounts to a bunch of words that does no one any good. And God placed you on earth to do good for others on His behalf.

James couldn’t have put it better. What God wants you to do is put His word into action. Just listening to His word and doing nothing about it does nothing for you or anyone else. What does it mean to put His word into action? Love! Love God with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength; and love your neighbor as you love yourself.

When you do those two things, you will take action to help the down and out. You will assist those in need. You will teach those that need assistance how to care for themselves and lend a hand until they get to the point that they can stand on their own feet. You will take care of the widows and orphans. You will recognize each person as a living soul instead of another mouth to feed or another need to be met. You will see others as God sees them.

God is a God of mercy and grace, but a time will come, when you will see the other side of grace, justice. Those not for Him are against Him and will feel the wrath He has held back to extend His mercy as long as possible. He is a God of mercy and grace, but He is a holy God. As such, He will deal with those who have not set themselves apart for Him. Remember His words in Hebrews, without holiness, you will not see God. Take advantage of this era of mercy and grace before God decides it’s time to unleash His wrath. It won’t be long.

God's followers have an indescribable peace that lets them sleep soundly at night without fear. The peace He gives lets His followers know He loves them unconditionally and they can rest in Him. They know there is nothing that separates us from Him because He has forgiven our sins and accepted us as His children. He is our God and can provide all we need.

The perfect peace He gives brings an unrelenting joy no matter the circumstances surrounding His children. Peace prevails in the darkest hours of life, in the most hectic and difficult circumstances, in the times that disaster seems inescaspable. He is there and He brings His perfect peace. As many of His followers testify, His peace is indescribable, but it exists in the hearts of those who follow Him with their whole heart.

This eleventh chapter of Hebrews gives a litany of heroes of faith. But the truth is they were ordinary men and women. There was nothing special about them. They had no special powers or extraordinary traits. They had one distinction that set them apart from those around them. The believed what God told them.

The first words in today’s scriptures tell it all. “Faith is the assurance of things you have hoped for, the absolute conviction that there are realities you’ve never seen.” They believed enough to take action. They believed the promises God made to them. Faith is as simple as flipping the light switch and expecting the lights to come on. It’s just believing. So exercise some faith. Like the heroes mentioned here, believe in God.
