Paige Converse is the host of the Cup of Words podcast, a podcast that features their spoken word pieces and her interviews where people share their favorite poem with her, and the two talk about it. I'm excited to say I was their first guest for this podcast, and I shared my favorite poem, Storm by Tim Minchin…so if you want to hear me recite Storm in its entirety and then hear the two of us discuss it check out their podcast, link is in the show notes. Upon reflection, I do have one regret following this conversation with Paige…both her and I share a deep love of punning…and yet I don't think either one of does a single pun in this entire conversation, and that is definitely something I regret. My guest this episode is Shanna Felix, and she will actually be interviewing me. Shanna is a 3rd year phD student with Georgia State University working on a dissertation relating to criminal justice where her field of study is criminology, queer criminology, and the experience perceptions of people who identify as queer have with the criminal justice system. One of the driving forces for Shanna was the realization that academia has largely ignored this area of knowledge, and its difficult to find answers when you don't even know what questions need to be asked. Shanna identifies as a queer lesbian herself, and is a former Jehovah's Witness. If you want to hear more from Shanna, she was recently a guest over on Queersplaining a podcast by the amazing Callie Wright. The episode is titled Queer Criminology, and was release on March 21st 2019, just one week after Shanna and I chatted…yes that's right I've had this conversations sitting in my computer for like 6 weeks…I'm sorry Shanna!

My guest for this episode is Yannick Taylor who hosts the Black Tran and Beautiful podcast, which can be found pretty much everywhere my podcast can be found…I found her on Spotify. When I was checking to make sure this show looked the way I wanted it to in Spotify I searched the word "Trans". That was back in December, and even now searching in June, the only two transgender podcasts that come up when I search "trans" are hers and mine…which is like really sad. On the other hand, it gave me an opportunity to meet and chat with The Divine Priestess herself, Yannick Taylor. Her show page describes The Black, Trans, & Beautiful Podcast as "an outlet to educate, enlighten, entertain, and to inspire. No topic is off limits." I've been a listener and patreon for a few months now, and it's a great addition to my regular podcast rotation.

In case it wasn't obvious by the title, Yannick is a black trans woman, and she's also a church leader…which makes yet another christian that has been willing to come on this atheist podcast…I guess hashtag not all christians?

Stick around through the interview, as Yannick is also a musician, so I thought it would only be appropriate to close the show out with her music.

My guest for this episode is Shane Armstrong-Phairchyld, artist, dad, and the branch co-director of the trans-youth education and support of Colorado. I met Shane through a mutual friend Daylin. Dr. Eric Meininger specializes in adolescent health with special emphasis on transgender adolescents and LGBT homeless youth. I first met Dr. Meininger about 6 years ago in a professional setting, but we don't mention anything about in this episode because we are both cognizant of patient privacy and the ethics surrounding keeping patient information private.

Dr. Meininger is a wonderful person, a wonderful doctor, and gasp shock & horror, the lead usher at All God's Children Metropolitan Community Church. Yes Dr. Meininger is yet another christian appearing on an atheist podcast…but that's because to me the god question is much less important than how we treat each other, how we respect, care, and treat our fellow humans...and Dr. Meininger respects, cares, and treats his patients and the people in his life wonderfully. Too often in the trans community we are faced with gatekeepers who are trying to keep us out. Dr. Meininger definitely manages a gate, but from this interview, and the years I've personally known him, his role at that gate is to help the trans community get through the gate and onto their true authentic selves. We need more allies like Dr. Eric Meininger in healthcare.

My guest for this episode is Jennifer Landuis, she is the Director of Social Change at the Idaho Coalition Against Sexual & Domestic Violence. This conversation may be difficult for some listeners as it is a frank discussion on the work Jennifer is doing in combatting sexual and gender violence. The conversation takes a few detours on the way, we touch a bit on her Christianity and social justice and getting deeper the conversation turns to why we sometimes use the term gender violence in lieu of domestic violence, what her recommendation is if you come across an abuse situation in public, and how to find resources in your area. This is a pretty long conversation, and a conversation which was over much too quickly.
