Welcome to a Moment to Pause with Br Michael Moore OMI as we journey through Holy Week. 

Good morning and welcome to our morning prayer as we continue Holy week.

We are present at a third meal today. Judas seals not only his own fate, but also Jesus’. He carries out the betrayal he began when they were eating together yesterday. Jesus repeats his words,‘one of you will betray me’. How do I feel when I hear Jesus speak like this? These are difficult words to hear, and the others at the table are greatly distressed, each one crying out, “Surely not, I, Lord!”Again we are called to be actively present as all this unfolds, not merely spectating from afar. How do I feel as his closest friends betray and deny Jesus?

Let us pray that we will have the strength to stay with

We pray for our own intentions in silence.

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.

Lord, give us the strength to stay with you these days of Holy Week, as we carry our cross and follow you.

In the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Today we are presented with another meal. We hear Jesus speak directly to Judas and Peter. Judas betrays Jesus when he accepts a piece of bread from him. Peter is full of sincere words, but as we know by Friday, his actions were let him down, and he will deny that he even knows Jesus. These days we are called not only to witness, but to actively take part in all that is happening to Jesus. This is what he meant when he asked us to take up our cross and follow him. This is part of our journey.

Let us pray for the courage and strength to remain faithful to Jesus as his darkest hour approaches.

We pray for our own intentions in silence.

A question we might ask ourselves as Holy Week unfolds is where am I as all these things happen to Jesus these days? Am I watching from a safe distance, protecting myself, or am I with Jesus? He offered each of us the same invitation “Take up your cross and follow me.”
