4 stars: A Pinch of Promise by Elizabeth Maddrey

Rebecca has spent years running from the bad-girl image her father unintentionally painted of her, but when her new physical therapy client is Ben, who shared a summer romance with her 10 years ago, she needs to decide to either trust him with the truth or give him up.

(Though reviews are inherently subjective, I prefer to provide some organization to my opinions through the use of a personal rubric. The following notes may contain spoilers.)

Plot and Setting: 4 -- Plot has unique elements and no major holes, but a few shaky bits. Rebecca is unreasonably distrustful, over and over, and while I get the motivation, it was a bit repetitive. Setting is clear and believable. Timeline may be a bit hard to follow. First, the timing between this and book 1 seemed off. That one ends on Labor Day Sunday, and it sounded like Ben's surgery was the Friday before. Which would make day one of this book Labor Day, which seems unlikely. There are also some mentions of Jackson and Paige early on that make it sound like they've been engaged for several weeks at least, not just days. Within this book, most of the time, it's clear how time is passing, but here and there we have big, surprising jumps.

Characters: 4 -- Main characters are mostly relatable, realistic, interesting, and dynamic. Even minor characters have depth. Minor characters are good--I do love how much time is spent on the friend relationships, not just the romance. I like Ben, his consistent and determined love. And I can understand Rebecca being hurt by the pernicious misconceptions about her life, but her reactions seemed extreme, her unwillingness to trust anyone--and especially Ben--unreasonable, and she's just quick to see the bad in general. Not my favorite character, for sure.

Writing and Mechanics: 4 -- A handful of typos, punctuation issues, or word errors, but nothing that seriously hinders understanding. (Sara spelled once as Sarah, a word missing, etc.) Good use of alternating POV. Generally skillful writing. Great job of making sure we know what is going on without needing to actually show us every scene. Though skipping over scenes sometimes required some mental readjustment, it's mostly a great strategy.

Redeeming Value: 5 -- Well-developed, central, uplifting themes. Trust. It's all about trusting friends, family, and God. Giving second chances, forgiving, looking past our own hurts, and trusting.
