Publisher's Summary:
Sergeant First Class Avi Grant's return to Tallgrass, Oklahoma, is a long-deferred wish come true. With her final tour in Afghanistan over, Avi can focus on her future - a job here at home and a family of her own. There's just one thing she has to do first: visit her beloved commanding officer's widow and share her grief. The last thing she expected was to feel an instant attraction to the woman's son. Too bad the sexy surgeon is impossible to ignore...and even harder to resist.
The sting of his parents' divorce still niggles at Ben Noble. So when a warm, funny, and beautiful young sergeant arrives, mourning his stepfather's loss as strongly as his mother does, Ben can't help but feel conflicted. If his parents taught him anything, it's that love doesn't last - especially with a career soldier. But try as he might to keep his distance, Ben begins to see that Avi - and the spark she brings to his life - is the stuff forever is made of. As Avi's leave ticks away, can Ben convince her to take a chance on forever with him?

Sweet main characters, but weak plot line and unlike-able secondary character
I like this author and I have enjoyed all the previous books in the Tallgrass series, but this latest book in the series is my least favorite. It took me two weeks to finish it, because the story line and the main characters' issues just failed to hold my interest. The story was slow moving with very little conflict and might have been better suited as a novella.
Main character Dr. Ben Noble was a secondary character in the previous book. Nice enough guy with mother abandonment issues. Army Sgt Avi Grant was back in Tallgrass on a month's leave before taking on a new Army assignment in Georgia. Ben and Avi meet, begin dating and have some funny, sweet moments together, and quickly fall in love. Even though both characters continuously admit to themselves and readers that they want marriage, children and a home, neither will budge on their positions. Avi has two years in her next active duty assignment in Georgia and wants to remain on active duty until she can retire at age 38. Ben doesn't want to leave the Tulsa area because he wants to remain geographically close to his two grown, independent sisters who he helped raise. That's their 'big' conflict. It seemed rather weak to me, and I would think two such very smart, accomplished people could have found a way to work around this, like maybe he could relocate for two years, or they could explore some long distance relationship for the short term? Because they were so much in love, right, that they had so many options to TRY to make something work? There are such things as planes, cars so Ben could easily visit with his sisters and his niece and nephew back in Tulsa and they could come to see him, too. He wasn't being asked to colonize Mars! This plot was just an example of a 'solution in search of a problem.'
My main reason for giving this book an 'okay' rating was the character of Patricia, Ben's mother. I did not like or respect her at all in the previous book, and I did not care for how the author, through her characters, constantly justified Patricia's cheating on her first husband, and her abandonment of her first marriage and her three dependent children.
