Hi. My name is Gracie. Well, that’s my new name since he came and saved me from that awful place where they were killing me every day. I’m sure I would have died there if he had not come. Who is he? His name is Michael. He is my angel. I’m an English Bulldog and this is my story. 

For eighteen months I had the same life every day. I woke up and went out a little door to some rocky ground where I would “do my business” as Michael calls it, and then wait for someone to bring me some food. I would only see them pass by as they dropped off my portion in my dish. I don’t know their name because they didn’t talk to me. It was usually a man in a yellow coat...

A couple of times he took me out of my home into a dark building where he would tie me up and another dog would come in with me. I didn’t like that at all. I was so scared! When the man in the yellow coat was done with me, he would put me back in my home and then come check me every week.

  "If trees represented families, Brie imagined hers as a poor neglected sapling with one little branch.  She grew up as an only child without any cousins around.   Brie’s mother had been too caught up in her own life goals - or lack of goals, perhaps - to stop and share family history.  Brie had wondered about extended family, about where the rest of the relatives lived, and what history there was in her family.  Her mother always dismissed her questions if she tried probing.  Moreover, Brie’s father hadn’t stayed long enough to make much of a place in her history..."

Best Worst Day Ever

Hi! I am Jami Amerine And this week’s remarkable thought is inspired by a story I wrote called Best Worst Day Ever,... take a beat, take a breath, and listen in 

“Melissa, you are being impossible!”

A string of vulgarities swarmed, followed by, silence.  

“She hung up on me.” Max sighed.  

“I am so sorry Max.”  Max’s sister, Sonja consoled him.  

“I want to get along with her,” Max fidgeted with his phone, half hoping his ex-wife would call back, half dreading when she did. “For Macy and Micky’s sake if nothing else, but I don’t know how to negotiate with someone who is out of her mind.” 

Sonja stood from the small apartment’s, kitchen bar to fetch refills of the duo’s coffee.  “You know Max, we don’t have to see the twins on the exact day of their birthday.  We can take them to eat the day before or after.”

Max grunted in defeat...

My best friend Liz and I parked outside Mississippi College to watch their men’s soccer game. Our friend Bo had just made the team and we wanted to support him. Plus, Liz had a humongous crush on him.

It was hot and humid, so we sat behind the goal on the hill under the shade.
During the game, Liz turned to me and said, “Do you see #11?”
I quickly answered, “Yep. He’s good.”

“He’s fine as wine,” she said with eyebrows up.
I chuckled and wondered if she would think the same if we saw him up close. We rarely agreed on much of anything, especially boys.

After the game ended, we decided to wait on Bo to congratulate him and say hi…you know, just to be polite. We hoped he wouldn’t have plans that night so we could hang out...

Behold, She Will Be Called 

Holly couldn’t believe this was her actual life. She begrudgingly tied on her red apron and plastered on a forced, albeit festive, smile as she pushed through the swinging doors that led from the break room to the sprawling showroom of Neumann’s, otherwise known as the mile- long Christmas store. Every hour, on the hour, a message rang throughout the store: “Willkommen to Neumann’s—a mile of Christmas joy for every girl and boy. Whether you’re one or a hundred and two, we’ve got something special just for you. Happy shopping!” 

As she made her way to her work station in Section 8, Holly wondered why on earth she let her mother talk her into working at Neumann’s. “It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year” swelled from the rafters, but a “Bah humbug!” anthem retorted in Holly’s heart. 

This was never the plan.
