1603. Former ship's surgeon Gabriel Taverner is attempting to re-establish himself as a physician in rural Devon but it's not easy to gain the locals' trust and a series of disturbing incidents convinces him that at least one person does not welcome his presence.
Called out to examine a partially decomposed body found beside the river, Gabriel discovers he has a personal connection to the dead man. Teaming up with coroner Theophilus Davey to find out how the man died, Gabriel uncovers some darker aspects of the lucrative silk trade which operates from nearby Plymouth. It soon becomes frighteningly apparent that the people closest to him have been keeping dangerous secrets.

Overall Good
I enjoyed the time period and the protagonist. Most of the book held my interest extremely well, but toward the end, some information was provided more than once and a second POV appeared that I didn't really think needed to be there. In a couple of places, information was awkwardly provided. I'd rather the information come in a different way, like through dialogue. The epilogue went on too long.
Overall, this is a very good story, between 3.5 to 4.0 stars.
New Alys Clare series
I have been a fan of the Hawkenlye series and also of the Aelf Fen series. I am looking forward to subsequent books in this new one. This book introduces the readers to interesting characters. They are not perfect, they are flawed, and we have yet to learn more about them.
Alys Clare in a new mode
This was a well-written but sometimes challenging book, not because it was difficult to follow but because some of the violence raised some unsettling moral dilemmas. Remembering the era in which it was being related, and the role of women at that time, helped to reconcile those dilemmas to some extent.
Exciting, Believable Mystery
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. There are many twists and turns to this plot. There is the young doctor home from the sea. His family is glad. For life is full of peril. Then there is his newly married sister. In spite of all of this. Things are not as they appear to be. I don't want to ruin the story. You'll have to read it yourself!

your headline says "stuart england" but the series is set in the 17th century. It was the elizabethan england.
